If you're using Nav4all, this isn't an issue - Nav4all switches the backlight off after a few minutes, but then automatically switches it back on when new directions are about to appear on-screen...

Nav4all is an advanced GPS solution for BlackBerry devices that offers full navigation with complete voice feedback/directions - FOR FREE!

What GPS app are you using? BBMaps has an option to keep the backlight on untill the battery drops below a certain percentage (you choose the %).

I would check the options of the program you are trying to use. It may have its own backlight settings (like BBMaps and Nav4All).
