I have an 8330 for alltel and I wanted to download the new 5.0, but when I connect my bb to my computer and start desktop manager, it says 4.5 is the highest available. what's up with that?
Well unless you have a Boost Mobile 8330 its not going to show up in the Desktop Manager. Your going to have to download the file yourself, and run the loader.exe file. But if I may recommend, you really should just rather use a hybrid. BBTweaks.com has good ones, and they also have a really thorough tutorial. Though you should only use hybrids at your own will.

what would the benefit of the hybrid be vs the real deal? and what makes it a hybrid?
There are some really good forums on what makes a hybrid, but a hybrid is taking a base OS file, Boost 5.0 in this case, and changing most of the other files to improve performance, memory, speed, etc. If you go to BBTweaks.com they outline which files they have added to the hybrid from other OS 5.0 versions (and some OS 6.0 files). Remember that OS 5.0 is about 15 mb bigger than 4.5 and you will need to delete stuff or your phone will not operate efficiently.
From BB Tweaks v12
What's In this Hybrid?
Base OS of 5.0.0.438
About screen show 5.0.0.608
90+ 5.0.0.8XX Files
95+ 6.0.0.XXX Files
That's good, welcome to the hybrid 8330 family haha. And jbarbero do you know any hints by any chance when the 8330 hybrid v438.12 will be open to the public?

Markj22, the key is to remove all vendor.xml files on your computer, and any other 8330 software before attempting to load the os. As mentioned, it usually works better using loader.exe instead of desktop manager to install your os.
