Other specs would match the Passport

I based this design on the Hybrid Design BlackBerry showed in a patent. However, instead of using that mechanism, this one slides in and out using a mechanism similar to the Torch Line. It has the full QWERTY keyboard.

When closed the keyboard is hidden except for the top row which is always visible. This row has E-Ink screens behind each key. This allows the keys when the device is closed to act as the Call/BB/Trackpad/Back/End Toolbelt. Top row of keys are touch sensitive so the trackpad function works.

When open the keys return to the QWERTYUIOP keys. The top row of keys acts as the Flick to Type function like the Passport, or when in landscape allows the user to scroll up and down or left and right like a trackpad would.

So the third permanent row of keys would be physical or just touch/capacitive? Because you need enough space underneath regular physical keys to house the mechanical press components... either way even with a non-click top row (as the Passport is now), it would be awesome!

Theyre Physical, the device is 1 CM thick, so there's room for mechanical parts. Measuring the thickness of the Bold 9900 keyboard at 3 mm's including the plastic crap, there's plenty of room for this keyboard. (A taken apart 9900 that is)

Yup, the initial idea came from that patent.

OK with the idea but needs to be a smaller package. Don't want or need a 6 inch phone.

Definitely cannot be a 6inch device to make this work. 4-5inch no more.

I would be interested in something like this if it was more square, lol. Like the same dimensions as Passport but taller screen to take up the space freed up by the slideout KB. Screen would be smaller then 6" and not quite 1:1, but not as stretched as a 16:9 phone. A 4:3 Passport, like an old Monitor???

That would probably be my dream device, and have all the benefits of the Passport but be slightly better at videos and games since you could close the KB and turn it sideways for a bit more of a landscape aspect.

So the same design idea, except it would be like the same size as the passport, but a full 4:3 screen?

    Interesting.

    EPIC!

    That's 16:9 like Z30, right...? :-)

(4:3 is iPad or all-touch Passport, another screen ratio to cater for)

That thing would be so top-heavy it would be ridiculous. When the keyboard is exposed the top of the screen would feel like it would want to tip. A Z10 sized screen should be the maximum for this type of concept.

This is an awesome design but I like the round curve at the corners on my z10. Rest is fabulous.

    I'd just say:
Some clever engineering could alleviate or even eliminate the issue described...

Visa and Victoria concept is also similar to this but they will be having slider like keyboard which will rotate. Don't know how it will even work...
