BlackBerry Ultra Classic : More classic than the Classic!

Bold 9000 chassis, complete with the leather back, but a trackpad rather than the trackball. Up the screen resolution, but keep the size the same. Give it the same specs as the Q10.

This would be a really great bb10 device for those of us who prefer smaller "workhorse" mobiles.

How about an Ultra Classic model-blackberry-bold-10.jpeg

    Ain't that sexy!

That would be a very popular choice in my household. My wife is using her third 9900 but would love higher specs. We can hope.

An 8mp camera with a big lens and big sensors (like the HTC which is great in low light, like inside at night) would be great. 16GB storage, micro SD slot. Same cpu/gpu/ram as Q10.

Physical size wise, the 9000 was super comfortable in the pocket and the soft round metal trim ... so smooth in the hands! I actually never owned this model, but I liked the feel of it more than my 9900.

    Size comparison :

    Bold 9000
    114 x 66 x 14 mm (4.49 x 2.60 x 0.55 in)

    Bold 9900
    115 x 66 x 10.5 mm (4.53 x 2.60 x 0.41 in)

    Classic
    131 x 72.4 x 10.2 mm (5.16 x 2.85 x 0.40 in)

As we can see, the Classic is clearly enormous compared to the 9000. The Ultra Classic could easily shave off some of the thickness, due to batteries being more efficient now. Being physically smaller, in that "just right for the pocket and the hand" range, the Ultra Classic brings modern BlackBerry features to those who prefer a smaller device.

It's pretty much impossible to find anything the size of the 9000 these days, even a "feature phone", so I could see the Ultra Classic filling a niche.

IMHO this is where BlackBerry went wrong.

9900 should have been a 2GB plus hand-held. Camera should have had autofocus like lower graded bb's had. Should have had a front facing camera for bbm/skype. And the list goes on.

Lots of must haves. I got rid of my 9900 recently and let me tell you, BB7 and BB10 are two different things altogether.

I miss many things from BB7 that many may have forgotten by now, but all I can say is that although the classic and passport have a physical keyboard, it is not the same as BB7, and to go with a physical keyboard and not BB7's keyboard, I would choose the physical keyboards of the Z series 100 times over.

So i think this idea is good, if the ultra classic sports a bb7 style keyboard, not BB10.

Indeed, the curved Bold keyboard is more comfortable to type on and surprisingly more balanced in the hand when using one hand/thumb. That's probably why RIM went with that design over the straight ones like on the Q series. People forget that a lot of research foes into device ergonomics and it's not like human hands changed any in the last 20,000 years.

I have small hands. They are nimble and dexterous, but they are small. My pinky fingers are short, which is a pain for playing guitar let me tell ya! A smaller communication device works better in my hands. If swear I fumbled and dropped this Z10 (which I now use as tablet at home) many times in the several months I used it every day, where I don't think I ever dropped my Curve 8520 in the two years I used it.

    Curve 8520
    109 x 60 x 13.9 mm (4.29 x 2.36 x 0.55 in)

That's the smallest BlackBerry of the traditional shape that I have used. The 9900 was my favorite, but I still prefer the size of that Curve. For email, BBM, and taking pictures it was a really comfortable size.

That is actually not such a bad idea. Bold 9000 was the pinnacle of BlackBerry and then Storm 1 followed and it pretty much went downhill from there.

Maybe by reducing bezels around the device they might get in a a 3.1 inch screen. Never happen though because the market would be so small and the price too high.

    Love it!

Back in the day I could never have afforded a BlackBerry but I always liked that widescreen look. The red detail for the numbers is pretty sweet too.

I would have been tempted to go for the Classic if it had been the same size as the Q10 and sacrificed a portion of the screen to accommodate the toolbelt.

    Dispensed using my Q10 ----{\\\\|=[

BlackBerry, really need to check out crackberry more often... everyone knows they have john chen or the staff visiting this forum/site now n then.

They need to make a Bold 9900 Series with Q10 specs? i wouldn't mind that and slap BBOS10 on it.

Solid Leather back? steel frames/frets rock solid design etc

    come on blackberry.

Bold9900 or Q10 screen would be the choice.

John Chen is not stupid, they went with the straight keyboard so people can see a visual difference between the new Classic and older bolds

I'm sure the curved keyboard will see a return but it won't be for a generation or 2

The problem is the screen size. Nobody - really nobody - will be satisfied with a 2.5'' screen anymore. I loved my Curve but the most important argument for a change was it's damned small screen.

    LOL NO.

The classic, is a mix.... it's no way a successor to the BOLD9900

Then, the Q10 would have to be considered a mix too; lacking the tool belt, and software flow.

Some still clamor for a tiny'clicker, just to squirrel away neatly, so that is why BlackBerry is rumored to be releasing a 'clamshell' or folding phone ahead.
Problem is that this would also be a mix. Lol.
