Doesn't need to have all the spec and bells and whistles (processor, memory, etc.) - just a proper fully functional bridge similar to Miracast with display and sound but with a bi-directional input so you could control the functionality of your phone from the screen on the tablet, using the tablet as a touch display and keeping the processor, memory, etc. in the handset.

It should have aspect ratio of 16:9 (mirroring the z30 format but with a minimum resolution of 1920x1080 - is 4k a possibility at this stage or is the cost too prohibitive?

The same great speakers / sound we have with PB1 and the Z30.
4K would have several problems, it would need a seperate graphics chip embedded because the current crop won't be able to handle it, it would need a much larger battery, and it would be too expensive in the end. 4K would also barely make a difference as opposed to let's say 2K.

Screen-wise I was thinking either the current WXGA or WQHD to keep scaling close to perfect...

I had another idea: this device that accepts "cartridges" that normalizes the USB + HDMI connector for lots of different phones. Lots of devices (like the Z30) support USB OtG and have an HDMI port... but other devices use a, what's it called, MHL port to do video out?

So, what is needed are device specific adaptors that have the same EXTERNAL dimensions (slightly larger than the biggest device) and do the job of accepting each unique device (Z30, Z10, Q10, Samsung GS4, iPhone) and makes a USB + Video connector that can plug into this thing.

If BlackBerry put out a device like this that would accept ANY device with the appropriate adaptor then it would probably sell 10s of millions, and cost a lot less to manufacture than any tablet... and the 'adaptor' things would just be a frame of sorts with the appropriate wires / adaptors. If the thing was less than $200 including the "adaptor" and didn't have any RAM or CPU of its own (beyond that which a "dumb" HDMI TV has) then this thing could be awesome.

I think a Kickstarter campaign is in order.

This is oddly related to the recent speculation about Apple CarPlay and QNX except that, apparently CarPlay must "run on top of" QNX's dash processor to be functional when attached to an iPhone while a proposed docklet will simply need to be a $150 touchscreen and a Blackberry can do all the work.

In other words, an iPhone depends on the QNX to run iOS apps on the dash screen whereas a Blackberry just needs a big dumb touchscreen to turn into a fully functional tablet. Right?

You're clearly a moron. It may have some similarities to ASUS, but ASUS' is too separate, full blown devices, which is unnecessary. If you can do so much better, here's your chance, show us...
Wow!!! You call someone "clearly a moron" yet you can't take 5 mins to do some research to save yourself from looking like an even bigger d-bag? The Asus Padfone is not two separate, full blown devices as you claim. It is a phone with a tablet sized screen attachment. The tablet display is useless without the phone. It fully depends on the phone to work.

The worst part of this, is that you refuse to acknowledge that you have blatantly ripped off another design. You might want to do some research before you start designing things to make sure it doesn't already exist.

I have an awesome design for a full touchscreen phone with a single button on the front and a half eaten fruit logo on the back if you want to collaborate on it lol there's nothing like it on the market.

I have posts going back 1.5 years suggesting this exact idea. Glad someone listened to me
