I spent 16 years as a customer service manager at a major telecom company and the problem isn't intentional at all. The problem is the person answering the phone isn't the one developing new products.

It's definitely not intentional and wasn't intended to sound that way. The problem is that those who don't know make something up based on what they've heard or been told to say. The hardware and software development engineers are the only ones who know the truth. I know this all too well.
