Without being able to speak for BlackBerry, I would assume their rational is based on pixel density.

The Passport has a 1440x1440 pixel array, but the display is only a few inches in physical dimension, so the pixel density is very high. Remember some PC monitors don't have that amount of pixels and they are distributed over a much wider area.

If the website is using Javascript to read the screen size from the browser, it may use the values for example to scale a font. If it uses the true screen size, the font would likely be tiny and unreadable on the Passport screen, but look great on a PC monitor. So BlackBerry adjust the screen size to compensate for the much higher pixel density.

That website is just using regular Javascript: http://www.w3schools.com/jsref/prop_screen_width.asp

So yes, it is Javascript's problem. Probably something to do with zoom/scaling, since my Passport is also apparently 505x505.

Now, if you're wondering about BlackBerry "spoofing" a screen resolution, don't be.
