I would like to get a couple classics for use in Asia (att model) seems like you need to get a plan even at the 420 price....anyone know where to get the att version unlocked outright?

If your buying it outright you shouldn't have to. They just don't want to let you, just go to a store and tell them outright what you want.

Sometimes a retailer such as bestbuy will be better to straight out buy a phone.

I bought mine outright from AT&T. Popped in my SIM and it was good to go.

You're not with AT&T? Asking because I'm really keen to try the AT&T passport but I heard it was locked! Cheers

I'm with AT&T - they will make you get at least a month-to-month contract if you don't currently use them.

Why don't you pony up the extra $30 and buy it from Amazon?

Straight up, I want the sqc100-2 due to the bands and frequencies + wireless charging. Amazon is the sqc100-4 and out in Asia its the sqc100-1. I just want to buy the phone outright but I want the att version.

I chatted online with a customer service rep yesterday. Apparently, you have to order it with a plan but you will be automatically refunded when you fail to activate the SIM card. The catch is that even with purchasing the phone outright, they will not unlock it for 60 days.

Walked into ATT store on 65th and 3rd and told them wanted a Classic. No contract. No nothing. I put 5 $100 bills on the table and said "ring me up". They started with their different plans and I stopped them and told them I did not want to hear it. Just sell me the freakin' phone. For real money and leave me alone. They did.

Yup, you just have to call in to a few stores and try your luck,
someone will agree, but yes as Xadion recommend try best buy as well.

they will unlock it, I believe they have to provide the unlock code right away if you buy a phone outright.
but if not and they insist on the 60 days thing then you can buy an unlock code, or call in and speak to a manager with
them and keep insisting they unlock it for you

I have ATT through my work. Is the SQC100-2 the official ATT version, and apart from the wireless charging, is it any different from the SQC100-4? I guess what I am asking is, if I dont care about wireless charging, will the SQC100-2 work any better with ATT than the SQC100-4 would? I know it does have some slight differences in the bands.

    SQC100-1
    2G: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz
    3G: UMTS 800 / 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz
    4G: LTE 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600 MHz

    SQC100-2
    2G: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz
    3G: UMTS 800 / 850 / 1900 / 2100 MHz
    4G: LTE 700 / 800 / 850 / 1700 / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600 MHz

    SQC100-3 & SQC100-5
    2G: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz, CDMA 850 / 1900 MHz
    3G: UMTS 800 / 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz
    4G: LTE 700 / 1700 / 1800 MHz

    SQC100-4
    2G: GSM 700 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600 MHz
    3G: UMTS 800 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 MHz
    4G: LTE 700 / 800 / 850 / 1700 / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600 MHz
