Try to install the Fix or Fixer App (depending on your Whatsapp-Version) with DDPB-tool (Google for download link).

Looks like I missunderstood your question first. To change status picture on whatsapp goto Settings, touch Profile Picture and choose another one from picture galery.

you should download fixer app which will make you do so. The only thing is needed that keep your app updated otherwsie you can miss some features.
