I am a constant news reader and love to do this with my Classic on the commute. Whilst browsing I hardly use the touch screen.....here's how I use the pad

Ignore if you are familiar with it ;-)

Let's say we are on a website ... we all know that we can open a link in a new tab by holding the track pad...and then pressing again (default setting is open in new tab)

To get to the new tab scroll to the bottom. Once the cursor is way down the lower band looks like on this picture.

Now we can click on It and it will show the navigation bar. On this we can now move to the left and click on the symbol that indicates 2 tabs.

After clicking we can select any tab that we opened.

To close a tab move slightly to the right when in the 'tab view'. You will notice that the small X changes it color, indicating that it is selected. Click...and the tab is gone

To get to tabs just press W.

But yeah, if you wish to only use the trackpad, above is only way.
