Compared to the Bold 9900 it's intending to replace, it's still miles ahead. It's a BlackBerry, it has a keyboard, it has a trackpad and it's not on the way out, and that's what matters to enterprise.

Some people got old curves, why don't we just release a phone with Bold 9900 specs because that's miles ahead of those old curves...

It makes no sense to buy a "new" phone with 2 year-old hardware. It doesn't matter what you're coming from. That's a bad investment.

Classic does not need to be high in specs. It should be easy and convenient to use and a long lasting battery for whole day of communication be it calls or messages of any form.

No, I am confident it's going to be super dense with 1440 x 1440 resolution like Passport !

Remember, it's difficult to increase density with higher diagonal size. But BlackBerry has cracked that engineering frontier somehow. Also Chen asserted multiple high-end phones this year.

I don't care about pixel density, as long as it's AMOLED.

It was previously called the Q20. This should mean better internals and a better device overall vs the Q10. I can see why 720p could still be used. But the rest should be improved.

There's absolutely no way they're going to squish a 1440x1440 resolution in a 3.5in display. You can't just make displays any resolution you want. They take research and development to create.

This is why qHD screens todag are usually 5.5in or more. Its very difficult to shrink screen size with these resolutions.

I agree, I also don't see a purpose for it. The resolution of the Passport is already overkill in my opinion...

The next step up from 720p was 1440p. Makes things easier for developers.

Its all about cost vs specs.
A corp would eat up cheap good enough phones before expensive but may last longer ones.

Poor long-term planning then. If it lasts half as long, I'm willing to bet it will not cost only half as much...

Actually, the reverse is true. Larger smart TV displays typically come with pixel densities lower than 300 of an average 3G smartphone. Also, that's probably why Z30 has lower PPI than Z10.

1440x1440 in a 3.5in display is pretty much impossible at this point in technology. The tech isn't there yet. I'd love it if the Classic had that kind if resolution, but its not going to happen. 1440x1440 would come out to 581.85 PPI. That's literally higher than any mobile device in history.

    Not gonna happen.

Considering that most 3D AAA games don't work well on Q series thanks to the 1:1 ratio, I believe Classic does not need better performance than Q10. Of course, improvements in battery life and more features are always welcome, but I don't think Q series need incredible specs with huge performance

Except passport, because it powers a 1080p level screen

Suspect the screen resolution will likely be higher than 720*720.

Just a hunch, but since the Classic will come with 10.3.1 I would imagine the hardware to be closer in specification to the Passport than the original Q10 (which is a year and a half old).

It's not really about UI elements, more with the app as a whole. I suppose considering its resolution passport can conceivably scale down stuff and slap black bars on top and bottom (or left and right), but the 5" is diagonally. 5" on 1:1 is totally different than 5" on 16:9, so the shrinking down will be a bit more prominent

Even if the battery in non-removable and let's say it only lasts 18 months, most people upgrade to the latest phones within 18 months anyways. It would be better if it was a removable though as I like saving working BlackBerry's to add to my BlackBerry collection. Hopefully it will have the same ram as the passport but I am still going to try before I order my new daily driver anyways.

    Nothing impossible anymore.

    1440 x 1440 = 2,073,600 (square) means 2,036 diagonal resolution
    1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600 (rectangle) means 2,203 diagonal resolution

Those phones also happen to have 5in screens or even more. The G3 and Find 7 are 5.5in.

The Classic is 3.5in!!! There is absolutely NO WAY the classic is going to be 1440x1440. You think BlackBerry can just create anything they want. Technological limitations exist. A 1440x1440 3.5in would be a revolutionary breakthrough in screen tech.

I'm curious. While I can see the difficulty in applying 1440x1440 to a 3.5", your responses seem to be emphasizing that the limitation is more on the size of the screen itself instead of the process of putting in the screen pixels.

After all, a 3.5" screen with 580 ppi would be of the same density with a 5" screen with 580ppi, the 5" simply will contain more components to cover the extra 1.5" area

I repeat : the reverse is true. It's easier to package more pixels per inch on a smaller diagonal.

Example : Sony 4K display gives a vast resolution of 4096 x 2160 that works out to 154 PPI on a 30" diagonal. But another Sony 4K display gives a vast resolution of 3840 x 2160 that works out to just 79 PPI on a 56" diagonal. That's the technology frontier or paradox.

The fact that Chen did not bother to reveal specs of Classic (while demonstrating Passport) is itself a sign. What was assumed previously to be impossible with Classic was accomplished even with Passport !

You're... um... talking about an entirely different thing.

He was talking about ppi, pixel per inch. If you keep the same number of pixel but reduce the surface size, you'll end up with larger ppi.

It's not... as you say it... "easier" to "package more ppi on smaller diagonal". Sony's 30" screen needs vastly higher pixels to average to 580ppi as you request, around 3 to 4 times the pixels, maybe about 16k x 9k resolution. They'd need to use the same size of diodes to work
