Q10 vs Classic vs Passport
As an active family man in the IT field I need a phone that is just as productive as I am. I need a phone that can keep up with me and not slow me down. Below are brief opinions of each phone and in the end I have decided which was best that fit me and my lifestyle.
Q10
The Q10 is the most mobile of the phones. I can easily carry it around with me when I'm out and about and especially when I go for my long runs. I use Endomondo with Google Play music for my 4 mile runs.
Texting and emailing is where the Q10 is at its strongest. Whether it's a short or long winded message the Q10 will crush it.
In the IT field I google everything, and with the Q10 browser it can be cramped looking up information or reading pdf white papers. It gets the job done, but it can be a bit of a struggle when reading loads of data.
I'm not a big photo guy, so the camera is perfectly fine. It's focus ability is slow but it doesn't bother me at all.
Overall, the Q10 is for the someone looking for the small PKB phone and that needs little android apps. Performance can hinder some of your favorite apps. It's not to say it won't work, but for me it I prefer it to be as smooth as native apps. It can get frustrating waiting for some apps to load or refresh especially when you're in a rush.
Classic
The classic feels like the grown up version of the Q10. It took me several days to get use to the toolbelt. But once I got use to it it made a big difference in navigating the phone. For me, it's much more efficient using the Back and End keys to close apps, go to the home screen, etc. And the trackpad really changes the workflow throughout the phone. Almost everything can be perform utilizing the bottle half of the phone. I don't have to adjust my hand to select an item at the top of the screen.
Even with similar specs to the Q10 the classic feels faster because of the workflow efficiency of the toolbelt. Some of my android apps are still sluggish so that hasn't changed.
The LCD is a huge step up from the Q10. It's brighter and feels much better on the eyes.
Overall the Classic is better in every way, if not, equal, in comparison to the Q10. The keyboard is better, build quality is better, screen is better, battery is better (so far it's better by about 15-20%. It may not seem better the first couple of days of use). Whether I'm doing personal or work related tasks on the phone the Classic provides a better experience than the Q10. The only concern some people my have is the density of the phone. It's pretty heavy for its size, but it'll likely bother those are looking for the smallest and lightest phone.
Passport
The awkward large size of the passport isn't a concern for me unless I'm walking around and need to look up something. I would have to stop and/or use the phone with two hands so I won't drop it. In meetings, it's hard to be discreet using the phone.
The keyboard is good, but got as great as the Classic or even the Q10. The touch enabled feature really helps speed things up a little but can't match the Classic/Q10 speed and efficiency.
Where the passport really shine is its screen. Viewing web pages and reading email is much better. In addition, the beefier specs makes most android apps fast. It loads faster and operates faster.
Even with the larger size I can still take the passport with me on my runs. I use a running belt so it fits fine and the weight doesn't bother me at all, but there's no way I can run with it in my hand or on some sort of armband. The Q10 was perfect for that.
Overall the passport's amazing screen and fast performance makes it an easy choice if you use a lot of android apps. The camera is better too. The pictures look a lot better, but the focus can be slow and anything motion will result in blurred pictures. The battery life is superb. It feels like it can last twice as long as the Q10. If you're always on the go and require one hand use the passport can be cumbersome when you want to do more than just scrolling through the screen.
My Decision
::::drum roll::::
The Classic wins.
It was a very hard choice between the classic and passport. In the end it came down to which phone gave me the least amount of stress. The passport requires two hands to use effectively, the 3 row keyboard is not as comfortable as I would like. And lastly, the passport doesn't fit any of my phone mounts that I have in my car nor it fits in my cup holder. So it's usually in my pocket or it slides around on my console.
For the classic, I can operate it with one hand. This means I can hold my thermos of coffee in the other hand while walking to the office. When browsing webpages the cursor helps tremendously and when clicking on small links. It's the toolbelt that gives the Classic that edge that the passport couldn't beat given the better specs, better screen, and better battery. If I had a more sedentary lifestyle I would have gone for the passport.
Well, that's my take hope it helps.
