My phone seems to use a lot of battery life even if I am not using it so much. I believe it is because all apps are not closed properly. Is there any other to close the apps properly or is it just the back button.

By default apps are set to "Run in the background."
That will drain the life out of your battery.
Other than a few system apps , no apps need to run in the background.
It allows those apps to "talk" to other apps and lets it "phone home" where data is collected and shared to
"Make your mobile experience more personal and fun!" or in other words ":spam you with junk more to your liking
and those apps "running" also open a backdoor for a malicious attack.

So, I'd suggest you go through each app..one at a time and turn off that feature.
Android likes to flag you with "are you sure?" and turning off this feature "may" cause other apps to not play nice.
Ignore it. What you're doing is stopping the app from accessing parts of your device that it has no business accessing in the first place.

It's a big bad world out there. And 9 out of ten people who know how to turn there devices ON have no clue how to turn them off!
