The 'berry worked great for the first two weeks but the past three days now it alternates connections constantly whenever I pull it out between H+, 4G and 3G, and SOS. Internet barely works on any connection (except for Wi-Fi) and it's a 50/50 shot I can make a call which usually ends with me getting the boot. Thought it was the carrier ( I'm stationed on Guam after all) but the wife's Galaxy S4 has no issues and we are both with GTA. So now i'm thinking maybe it's a handset issue. Didn't have too many issues like this with my Bold and I put in the same APN. Anybody have any suggestions or insight? Thanks.

I'm not familiar with your carrier, but you may want to reload the OS. Since it just started to be a problem it may not be related to your SIM.

That's a good idea, rule out any software culprits. Thanks for the tip, that may be in my near future.

Before reloading the OS, try a hard reset. Press the volume up and down buttons simultaneously, and then release when the blue start-up square appears.

maybe select the network type manually? and maybe avoid 4g?

I did the hard reset and manually selected 3G/4G only and it still alternates connections a bit often but the Internet browser is actually working now so I'll take that as an improvement and give it another day or two. Thanks guys.

4g has less penetration than 3g due to the higher frequencies used. it is notoriously flaky, though falling back and forth should be seamless...

You might just need to load the Radio again or try a diff one that works on your device. you can find radio and OS here,

Didn't know that about 4G - I just upgraded from the Bold so I'm learning some here. It's improved now but not perfect, still get an "error couldn't resolve host name" quite often in the browser and I have to refresh. I'm assuming it's related. I will look into re loading the radio or OS when I get some down time.

That is actually not accurate - the "4G" is based on the protocol used by the carrier (HSPA in the early days, then HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access) - and now there is LTE (Long Term Evolution). Some carriers run LTE on 700 MHz, and can also run it on 1900MHz and in some cases 1700MHz. The reason you generally see lower signal strength on "4G" signals is due to the amplifier power the carrier will deploy for data ( less RF power on down link is required for data than for voice).

I sell RF equipment to carriers - this is why I have this knowledge.

Possibly something is not working properly on your Classic (hardware problem maybe, or the radio you are running - you didn't mention what OS and radio you have).

My wife works at a hospital - met her for lunch one day - cafeteria is on the ground floor. We are both on AT&T - my Z10 could not even see the macro (had the red X) - her Classic had 3 bars and she could make and receive calls just fine.

I have a hard time believing that software version can affect radio signal strength so dramatically....errors and bugs sure, but signal/no signal...doesnt make sense.

Trust me, some radio's don't play nice with all the OS , i know from experience.

I too am finding much weaker reception than my previous handsets. I am on the same carrier that I was previously, which is supposed to be the best in the country. Sometimes I go to make a call and there is the dreaded red cross where the reception bars are supposed to be. Most of the time there is only two bars of signal when I'm in the burbs.

Just an update: I went to my carrier and they changed my data plan from a BIS plan to an Android plan and that fixed it. The BIS plan I had used an APN that was for 2G but now I have a different APN which the android phones use . BIS logo is still there next to the signal and email and everything still works, just faster, so I'm happy. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Its actually a bb logo not a BIS one. BB10 doesn't use BIS.
