I have a Bell Classic in black. The backlighting on the keyboard is weak and uneven. The 9900 had really perfected that in my estimation. I wish there were a keyboard light level setting.

It's almost a crapshoot trying to get a unit with even keyboard lighting. I've gone through several Classic units and have never seen a unit with even lighting.

This is really becoming bothersome. I wish the even bright backlighting of the 9900 was the same on the Classic. It's fair at best.

I just got mine in tonight and I have to say the LEDS are deffinitly dim and it does seem the left side of the unit is a little brighter than the right but you wouldn't tell from a glance. I'm good at soldering can anyone tell me how to get to the Blackberrys LEDS? I wouldn't mind soldering on new ones and see if that makes a differnce

The unit disassembles with a regular star driver available in sets from most corner shops, two screws under the clip - on panel below the keyboard and several under the back cover. The back is glued on so you'll have to prise it off, carefully, then undo the screws and unclip all the connections to camera, etc, as you take it off. The battery is also glued in, but it will come out with a little coaxing - remember to disconnect the cable as you remove it. Then you should be able to access the mainboard. Watch out for the silver plate near the card slots, it will fall out if you don't take it out first. Once you have the mainboard extracted, the LEDS are clearly visible on the front.

Disclaimer: DO NOT DO ANY OF THE ABOVE

Bold 9900 was the best keyboard bar none. For ease of character reading, backlighting, toolbelt depth.

Especially annoying on the classic are the smaller /thinner characters where numbers and letters share space.

The 9900's keyboard is the sex for sure! The Classic comes very close however... The Classic's keys are nearly the same size, but slightly shorter in height... The 'smile' of the 9900's keyboard made the spacing perfect, something the Classic sacrificed with the straight-laced keyboard it's packing... Still, I'd put the Classic at #3 of best keyboards ever... 9000, 9900, Classic, P9983, P9981 and then 9780/9700 (in this order, the top PKBs to ever bless a device...)

My Classic is pretty evenly lit with the exception of the M, $, Return, SYM and bottom right SHIFT key which have always been dim compared to the rest

Not sure why my Priv/CrackBerry for Android app occasionally post images sideways... Annoying... But yeah, anyways, it was supposed to look like this:

I think the 0 (zero) key is also dimmer.

Just the 'zero' itself, oddly the mic icon on the zero key is much brighter despite sharing the key... Strange, but now that you said that, I see it...

I used to do this back in the day with the Curves, Tour and Pearls... Took the devices apart and used a perm marker and/or colored plastic wrap to change the trackball's /keyboard's glow... #Memories

I agree, especially on the white version. I miss the 9900 in many ways.

If only they made these phones by hand and inspected each piece that went in the phone. Would have raised the price by hundreds (maybe even a thousand) hahaha but the complaints would almost stop completely!... delusional to think it's possible.

Yes I've had similar issues. I'm currently on my third Classic (this one is finally perfect) but the other 2 had problems

Number 1 had a toolbelt that was loose on the right side and uneven backlight.

Number 2 had very dim and uneven backlight

Number 3 is awesome in every way

So yes I imagine it's a crapshoot in regards to what you get. I would just keep returning 'em till I got the one I wanted.
