I have classic from Rogers in Canada with the original OS. I was under the impression that the end button can be used to turn the phone on. It can turn the phone off, but it doesn't turn the phone on. I have been using the power/lock button to turn the phone on.
Just wondering if anyone has encountered this issue.

nope it turn the phone off. That is why there is a button on the top.
edit yes it does turn it on..press and hold it till the light come on
then there is no need for the top button except to put the phone into sleep

maybe a settings...i'll look
if you hold the end call button does it turn the phone off?
I've been looking but can't find a setting that allows the end button to turn the phone on.

weird..works on mine..maybe rodger did something to it
Could be a software issue? Everything else I have checked worked as they should.

more likely software issue...don't bother with rodger
it seems to be hit and miss for me. It came back
edit I think I know why...testing...stay around
try this...before you power it off with the end key> unlock the screen> power it off>try again after 5 minutes
