The fear, the loss, and the sexy
Hello Classic members,
I remember the last dumbphone I had was a waterproof Casio GZONE type S for Verizon Wireless. I would show it off by dunking the phone in a cup full of ice and water @ IHOP and had one of my friends call it. Next thing ya know the cup starts vibrating and it lights up like a Christmas tree. It was fun but enter smartphone era.
At the time no phone was considered a true multitasking smartphone until Palm Pre came out. After doing an extensive research (I remember people would show off on youtube how many "cards," or apps, they can open and multitask in between all of 'em, 20+ if I remember correctly, and the smart gestures, 3D gaming; it was all too attractive. So I bought it.
Palm Pre+ (webOS)
What Palm did was amazing and I truly believed it was smarter than rest of the competition (hell, Android and iOS looked outdated and "dumb"). True multitasking, easy navigation amongst opened apps (horizontally swiping from one edge to another meant going from an opened app to another), qwerty keyboard, usb flash storage, and awesome Asphalt action! Palm had so much potential w/ their software, but their hardware was the ultimate Achilles heel. And I don't mean their hardware was outdated.. it was all bad QA. Double-typing? yup. Headphone jack not working? yup. Phone thinks you have headset plugged in when it's not, so NO SOUND COMES OUT, including ALARM AND EVERYTHING ELSE? yup. Wireless charging? Awesome. But people.. a working keyboard is a basic MUST, and being able to hear notifications is a MUST.
iPhone 4S (iOS - can't recall which version)
A solid, solid phone. By now, iOS and android devices are capable of multitasking, so why Apple over Google? Verizon Wireless only offered Moto droid variants and I dreaded it. Everyone had a black phone and I wanted something different. Amongst black laptops and black phones, Apple's white stood out and I liked their aesthetic design. And you know what? Everything just worked. And it was easy and simple. I didn't have to wrestle w/ the phone to type one sentence. I played Infinity Edge, which blew the socks off anyone who saw it. Only thing that sucked was iTunes.
Moto X (android - Jelly Bean? Don't remember) switched to T-Mobile
I wanted to save every bit of money and the iPhone 4S isn't a LTE phone. So I bought an unlocked Moto X (LTE) and switched to T-Mobile (save money). Moto X had features no other phones had. Being able to wake it up by simply saying "ok google now" and saying "wake me up in 30min" for a quick nap was cool. Ah the nonstop "breathing notifications" were cool too (no LED lights, actual icons). But the cons just outweighed the pros - camera that's worse than my then 2yr old iPhone 4S; horrible, horrendous display; and the phone just doesn't look timeless. I dislike the UI too. Would never ever go back.
iPhone 6
Ah, back to iOS felt good. Not to mention, the camera sets a benchmark for rest of the smartphones. It doesn't have the crazy uber specs of a Samsung's latest invention, but who cares. The phone runs fluid and smooth, because Apple has full control over software design and hardware as well. The two are just integrated so well. The apps work well, much support. The calendar works well, games play well, banking apps work well, kakaotalk messenger app works well. Everything just works.. well.
...but there's always a special place for a candybar design phone w/ physical buttons, and I've fallen in love w/ the Bold 9900's design long time ago. To this day, I'm still captivated by it. I remember telling my coworker how sexy her Bold was many years back. I've always wanted one...
The fear.
I am afraid of double-typing. I remember it was so painful to just type one sentence on the Pre+. It made me not want to type. I looked like an ***** if I didn't want to correct every word of every sentence, because it took way too long. And seeing how Q10s had mixed responses, and how some Classic users are reporting double-typing.. my fears came true. I heard Q10's double-typing became frequent or started happening after few months. What if the Classic did that? :crying: How is the QA on it?
The loss.
Yes, I won't be able to take just as beautiful pictures as the iPhone 6 for memory lane down the road, but that's okay. But what's not okay is Kakao messenger not working as smoothly or being bugged. This is my main communication tool for my family and loved ones. Telling them simply to switch to BBM is not an answer, because all of their friends and loved ones need to switch as well. The one in appworld isn't supported well, and sideloading means I may run into compatibility issues, such as not receiving notifications for messages, and running too sluggish. Games? no problem. Smartphone games aren't important to me anymore. Banking apps? That's another bummer. I love getting notifications and keeping track of my spending, but I wonder how it'll work when I sideload it. I know I can just use ie and log in, but the apps simply make it convenient, and using touch ID to instantly log in is even better.
The sexy.
If I have to give the sexiest phone award to one phone for the rest of my life.. it'll be the Blackberry's classic qwerty design. There's nothing more business-like, sophisticated, and sexy like Blackberry's qwerty phones. This alone I would buy a Classic. I have NOT run into a Blackberry user in years. Not lying, seriously. Not even a stranger. If the keyboard works great and I can communicate well for work and personal life, then I'm a happy camper.
TL;DR Has anyone switched from an iPhone to a Classic? And how do you like it? And why do you like it?
I know bakron1 switched. Just wondering if anyone else did.
