SAF is a fee that the carrier pay to BlackBerry for this BIS, BlackBerry Internet Service. Email and messaging goes through BlackBerry servers. I would "guess" the the equipment is capitalized over 3-5 years. So there is really little or no cost.

Every $1 of SAF money is pure profit. It gerally will take "at least" $4 of revenue to make $1 profit. Most cases closer to $8+

What I'm saying is the lost of SAF money can't be replaced one for one.

Now why would I want it?
    Why would anyone want it?

In order for the pre BB10 to work the carrier has to pay a fee for all devices on their network.

The consumer doesn't even know they have it. They only know their phone works.

BlackBerry get over $100M per month of this free money.

Now they are losing it daily because the OS7 phone are wore out or they decide the want a new phone.

BlackBerry only has 1% of the new phone market. but there are still millions of Legacy users

What you see on CrackBerry in complaints on making the transition to BB10 via the Classic is only the tip of the iceberg.

    I thought I answered it.

Let me put it this way.

No BIS/SAF fees are paid on BB10 devices they are only paid on Legacy devices (OS7).

So when people using a OS7 phone switch to a new BlackBerry phone the carrier (phone company) no longer pas these fees.

I would guess the fees are non expiring. As long as the user is using a OS7 phone BlackBerry gets the fees.

You or I don't need it because we are on a newer device (BB10)

Everybody needs it if they have a OS7 phone
