I can't see a reason not to use a case on your daily driver. The phone is def a beauty without the case..but it's not practical to anticipate a traveling computer not to get some dings here and there...so I think a sturdy case might mitigate further damage. Good luck.

    Is that bottom part plastic?
Than i might stay away from that phone

Yes only the bottom is plastic because of the antenna but the rest of the frame is metal

I use my phone naked, mine hasn't chipped yet, but I know eventually it will...

But I'm careful with my devices, I can use a device for 2 years or more and not have a single scratch on the screen.

Thanks for that picture. See that bottom plate where the charging contacts sit? That's painted plastic. Mine was almost all black by the time I sold it.

I was not impressed with the overall quality of the Classic compared to my Q10 when I spent some time with the former at my local AT&T. I've used my Q10 a lot for nearly a year, and it travels between that handsome leather holster and various pockets. The nearly all-black composition of the Q10 definitely helps keep it looking new--mine looks great. To me, not having to shield this in a case is one of its main attractions. Uncased, it's beautiful. It's held up in environments that clearly the Classic does not.

Some people care more about looks in a smartphone and some care less. One of the main reasons I keep going back to my Lumia 735 is that I find the Windows Phone 8.1 OS far more visually attractive than BB10, even though the latter is phenomenally more efficient as a communications device.

To each his own. Let's not forget it's a minor miracle the Classic even exists.

Hmmm, hopefully this is a fringe case. My Bold 9930 was purchased day one, and is still immaculate. The bottom plastic strip never lost its paint, and it still looks new. Daily driver for over 2 years.

I'd go so far as to say from a build quality perspective, the 9930 was the best phone I've ever owned. Just solid, comfortable, ergonomic, weighty in a good way, and just a beast. I have a classic arriving tomorrow, so here's to hoping its not a dud.

That paint chip off is not acceptable too bad! No matter what BlackBerry gives reason either they should have had a technology implemented such that the paint chip off wouldn't set in or the entire frame be of steel. This really gives a substandard feel. Very disappointed!

I have a screen protector and a hard plastic case on my Classic. It looks like it did when I took it out of the box.

I had my Q10 for 5 minutes and I dropped it. It has a barely noticible ding on the bottom, under the keyboard....

That's because it started off black... Which is basically the natural color of the plastic.

I personally feel the Q10 is the best. I didn't like the 9900's rubber sides (just behind the frame) and the thin plastic coated glass weave battery door. The Q10 notched in the frets, which is a nice touch, and the entire back is molded out of multiple layers of glass weave, which is much nicer IMO.

I agree the Q10 was very nice, although I do prefer unpainted stainless steel vs the black steel frame. Scratch painted metal and you expose the color underneath. Minor thing though.

I wish manufacturers would use steel as its much harder than aluminum. I get that aluminum is much lighter than steel, but drop an aluminum phone and it dents up like plastic. It's hardly resilient to drops. Blackberry is one of the few companies to get that right at least. And besides, I've never in my life thought "my God this phone is heavy". Lightness makes phones easier to drop.

I always keep my phone in a case/holster to keep it scratch free. If you put it "naked" in your pocket, you should not be surprise that there wil be a scratch on it. Imo

Seriously , my bold never had any wear. No chipping paint or whatever...
That frame was metal , i actually sold it a few weeks ago and it still looked amazing.
I'm just surprised that there is such a big plastic part at the bottom , or can't people be surprised ??

I don't like cases at all , so yeah my mistake i guess

The classic feels solid but it is actually cheap. Whilst the 9900 was beautifully built.

Ok, I'll look to see if I still have the photos I took for my ebay ad when I was selling my 9900 of the paint coming off the bottom panel of the 9900. I look forward to posting them here now. :-)

IS perfectly right, my bad. Makes sense since you don't want to create a short circuit between the two charging contacts.
