Whirs around a bit "Computing backup data" then Message from LINK is "Did not complete. Check device is on and connected to Blackberry Link.

Blackberry IS connected via USB cable. Link says it is. Contents are mapped into Windows Explorer. Running Windows 7 and latest link download.

    Any suggestions gratefully received

Try a different (good quality) cable and connect to one of the rear USB ports?

Thanks for the suggestion lsdblackberry. It was well worth trying but still no joy. Used official Blackberry cable this time, and tried several slots with the same result. No problems with my old BB Curve with old Desktop Software.

Must say am very disappointed with the new Classic. Will stay with the Curve for now. Only hassle is the pathetic browser but serves me well for email and scheduling/contact list.
    Thanks again

Unless you are going Jason Bourne like not sure what good Link does anymore - most of us use Google to back these up.

My calendar, contacts and e-mail are Google, you can use a program to back texts up. Pics are to memory card.

My Classic does all of that organization stuff better than an android device.

At least use a 99xx Bold if you are going old school ...
