This is critical. Because you have already established that your phone can do calls (at least on 2G) when there's no dropping down from LTE involved. If the Cricket SIM card was on '4G' network, it wouldn't have to drop down. But if it dropped from LTE to something, then there's something going on at the TMO end.
Oh man I didn't pay attention to that. I just wanted to check if it can make calls. I may need to check again but not for awhile.

@modifier, is an LTE to GSM hand-off any more difficult to execute than an LTE to UMTS hand-off?
In theory, there shouldn't be any difference in the time or execution of switching the radio from LTE to UMTS or LTE to GSM when a call comes through, provided of course that the tower itself doesn't have issues handling UMTS/GSM traffic. The data packet sent to the handset to trigger a voice call is the same. It's then up to the phone to check the network for GSM/UMTS/VoLTE service (which it does upon tower registration) and choose the best option based on what the tower offers and/or what's allowed by that carrier.

bunky do you have a TMO network SIM that you could maybe try when you get the time? So a SIM from TMO, Metro, ST on TMO, Ultra, etc.

If you have the same problem as the OP, it would suggest it's a network issue, and a wide one at that. It can't be a problem with the Classic line as both AT&T and Cricket SIM cards drop down for you.

I don't have the same issue. My TMO sim acts the exact same way from LTE to 4G to LTE when in LTE and
At 4G areas it drops to E then back to 4G

No, it absolutely should. The problem in your case seems to be the LTE to UMTS/GSM hand-off that allows for calls. I'd recommend you give a different OS a try before completely writing off this phone.

Since this seems to be somehow happening to you with a T-Mobile SIM, have you tried your SIM card in another phone? Or tried another T-Mobile SIM card in your Classic?

I get T-Mobile LTE on the -1 AND the -4 however, my cricket Sim gives 4G on the -1 and LTE on the -4

Now, the 'about' screens show on the -1
    1/2/5/6 UMTS and 1/2/3/5/7/8/20 LTE
And the about screen on the -4
    1/2/4/5/6 UMTS and 1/2/4/5/7/13/17/25

So TMO must have a band 2 LTE network where you're using the -1 (in addition to or instead of a band 4 network.)

AT&T-relevant LTE bands are: 2/4/5/17. It can't be band 2 or the -1 would get LTE. Band 5 is being used for LTE in a very limited number of places. So it's probably band 4 or 17.

There's a way to figure out through the e-screens exactly which band you're parked on. PM me if you're interested and let's not take this thread any more OT
