I have an old BB Bold 9000. Long story, I found it, turned it in, never got collected so now I have it. It's been sitting in a drawer for the past 12 months, finally took it out the other day and had a look at it...

Just as well I did, the battery had blown up like a balloon so I got rid of it quick smart. The exterior of the phone is quite beaten up so I was thinking to restore it. Had a look on ebay and found the following:

    1) External casing (back and front) - $10
    2) Battery - $7.00
    3) Trackball - $2.00

All up just under $20 to get it going and looking like new.

However there are a couple more things to consider. The phone has been locked down, some kind of corporate lock down. Is there a way to wipe the device and actually use it again?

Secondly, what is the highest OS that the 9000 can go up to? 5.0?

Yeah 5.0 is the newest available.
$20 isn't a lot, but I'm not sure that you'd have much use for a what, 7 year old phone?

Yeah I guess it's mostly sentimental reasons. BB9000 was the first ever smart phone I bought. I have a Q10 now but I guess I was wondering if it would be practical as a phone these days.
    Probably not right?

It's actually less than five years old, and not much older than an iPhone 3Gs, which you still see out there. It might be worthwhile as a backup, and is certainly capable of fulfilling any email and messaging needs. Beyond that, not so much. Although if you needed to use a browser on it, I imagine you can still find Opera Mini for OS 5.0. And you can wipe it to get rid of the "corporate lockdown" -- there are instructions here on CB, but you'll have to dig for them. Getting rid of the firewall is a huge part, so that should help in searching.
