i updated my whatsapp, because it told me too, and now my media homescreen is completely empty and my individual media folders (music, pictures, etc.) that appear on my "all" homescreen are just black boxes with a question mark. how do i get them back??

Did you try a battery pull or soft-reset?

As already said, a battery pull should hopefully resolve it...

Hmm, uninstall and reinstall? Maybe this is a global issue and no one else has seen it yet? I've not even looked at mine...

just for the sake of it try a long battery pull(2 mins)

if it doesnt work, remove whatsapp and then re-install, still nothing then wipe the device using full erase or bbsak and then re flash the OS.

I am not facing any such problems, my 9900 is on the latest .923 os with BL RC15 hybrid.

I think its in your best interests, to update your OS.

    thx for your help,
did battery pull and removed/reinstalled whatsapp, no change. I tried to update but it tells me i have the latest version...v7.1.0.746 platform 5.1.0.546
looks like i may just have to accept the empty media homescreen and move on

Themes are known to do just what you described and it usually doesn't happen until after a reboot. Did you download a theme and activate it and then download whatsapp and reboot?
