Trying to help my mother over the phone with her 9700. Getting "page too large errors" with just about anything in the browser. Her response was to take it to TMo - who basically tried to sell her a new phone.

I'd installed 6.0.0.615 for her before, but now pondering the scary prospects of an OS change / reinstall via the phone. (I have total respect for how frustrating doing IT support is over the phone)

Debating reinstalling 6.0.0.615 vs taking it back to OS5 knowing that she doesnt need latest and greatest, she needs stable.

I much prefer 6.0.0.576 over both of the .6xx builds. More stable, better radio and battery life. I shrink it down to about 42MB, add VVM cods, and Bob's your uncle.

Unfortunately, the only way to minimize the "page too large" errors is to disable javascript in the browser, and clear your cache frequently. No build has fixed that for the 9700. Only way to be rid of them is to revert back to 5.0.0.979, or the 10xx build. My wife is still running .979 on her 9700.

If she is already used to BB6, and likes it, I'd recommend sticking to .576.

Thanks, We'll see how that works. Far easier to explain over the phone. If that doesnt work we'll try .576 - she's described exactly that "the battery is now bad".

Also take into account the possible age of the battery. My 9700 is 3 months away from a solid 2 years of service. I suspect that the battery may be starting to lose efficiency and may be on its way out. I can still get about 24 hours of use out of it, but I used to get well over that.

Might wanna grab a $12 extended battery from ebay.

Or, reinstall OS6 but shrink it first, so you get rid of all the crapware you surely don't/ won't need on her phone.

5.0.0.862. Don't need the headaches of OS 6, 5 does everything I want and is very stable.

I run 6. It worked great at the start but not its annoying me to no end. I haven't shrunk it down though. It sounds like it would solve my problem. Ill have to figure that out and do it.

I run 6 on my 9700 mainly because my work BB is a 9780 and they are different enough to be disconcerting.

When you guys are talking about shrinking the OS, are you just referring to unchecking the items you dont use at the time you are installing the new firmware?

    Thanks.

the amount of memory will depend on how many apps you have installed.

OS6 hands down with more BOLD graphics and the smoothness of course.

I was asking about memory after a clean install. Thanks.

Serious shrinking involves removing .cod files from your Java folder BEFORE installing the OS. You can do this manually if you do your research, but apps like BBSAK, MCP, and BB Boss provide a handy GUI that lets you shrink very easily. Hardcore shrinkers will use these tools, and then STILL remove some additional .cods by hand afterwards.

    I shrink out:

    • All non-BB fonts
    • All IM clients
    • All foreign language support
    • All media samples (music, vids, wallpapers, etc.)
    • TTY support
    • Any included carrier items that come in .cod form and can be removed (CityID, AppCenter, etc.)
    • Help files
    • AT&T nabsync
    • AppWorld and BBM (I am usually running betas from Beta Zone)
    • Docs To Go
    • BB Maps
    • Probably more that I can't think of off the top of my head

I leave Voice-Activated Dialing and Visual Voice Mail because I use them both, but many people shrink them out.

I agree, I upgraded to OS 6 and since have regretted it, OS 5 is the better fix to that problem.

There is nothing that will make OS6 work on the 9700. Forget about it.

The 9780 is not much better.
