I entered into the contest for the Onyx. It says I may win an Onyx with a Dead Pin. What does that mean? Is it a once functional, but now a paperweight? Can it be revived through some work around?
I meet a dude with a Bold that had a disabled PIN and the device wouldn't get data just edge no EDGE. So no emails BBM nothing would work except voice.
The PIN is what RIM uses to recognise the device. This is needed to activate BIS or BES. Without either of these the phone will manage voice calls and sms messages as these are carried over the mobile network direct but anything that needs to pass through RIM such as push email, BBM, internet traffic will NOT function if you're device has a dead pin.
What the competition is offering you (I think) is a fully functioning Onyx techinically but due to the dead pin it's severely crippled and will in fact to do nothing that most people would consider crucial when getting a Blackberry. It will look very nice, have the latest OS on, and all the options to do what you want will be there but sadly none will work.
Best of waiting to get a fully working Onyx if you actually want Blackberry service with your Blackberry.

Yeah. I'll wait for a "good pin" Onyx! Lol... Alhough if I had a dead pin model to play with, it wouldn't be so bad guess (provided I didn't pay for it!)

Pin "goes dead" usually because of being reported stolen, or if it is a testing device, that is reported to be in the wrong hands (Maybe the tester sold it and someone found out...) if you understand :P
I wont mind getting the dead or good pin i have my 8900 as a back up and when it officially comes out ill get one that works 100%. But having one now is still bad *** at least i think.
