Video confused me, 8GB Internal memory or SD card?

The british guy that was doing the videos last week said it was 8GB of internal built in memory. The guy who did the unboxing said it was 8GB micro SD card, which one is it?

Just a slip by an over-excited, lucky, SOB. He meant internal memory. It does have a microSD slot, but there wasn't one inserted in the phone.

Right, so you get 8GB on board media memory, and you can add an SD card.

Also, can you then save apps to that on-board memory, or not? Is there really only ~200MB for memory?

Looks like 188mb RAM and 6GB of storage to me. If the OS is 580mb then what the **** good is the added ram? That will be a deal killer. I am not going back to installing and uninstalling apps as I use them like I do now on my 9000.

Good point. There'd better be a whole lot of Carrier bloatware you can delete to explain the shortfall.

Waiting to see what an unlocked/unbranded unit shows for available RAM.

On the RIM website the spec sheets when compared are, 9930/9900 "8 GB Internal Memory". The other OS7 devices 9810/9850/9860 say "8 GB Internal Memory & 768mb of RAM". They are clearly different.

Also, if programs were to be allowed on the storage memory then why segregate the memory?

    I believe it's

    9930/9900 - 8gb internal memory / 768mb ram
    9810 - 8gb internal memory / 768mb ram
    9850/9860 - 4gb internal memory / 768mb ram

    Or

The point is the BOLD's are using the same block of memory for both and the Torch's are not.

Perhaps some of future proofing for QNX? Since QNX is coming out Q1 of 2012? Per RIM of course. It would explain how QNX would be out so quick if it were able to run on some current devices. It would also prevent RIM from having to trash so much hardware development in such a short time.

Hey that's nice. But I like mine better since you left out the ram specs.

BlackBerry - Bold Touch Phone - New BlackBerry Bold Touch Screen Phones

"Memory: 768MB RAM, 8 GB eMMC
Expandable memory: Up to 32 GB uSD card(optional)"

Okay, someone make me understand. I know it's 8GB of onboard memory. But that
doesn't include apps? App memory is still separate? And it's still 200mb??

Edit: I'm getting my answers here

Are you disagreeing with me on this? I JUST sent you a link to the official RIM website myself. Sometimes they condense the specsheets when doing a comparison chart and probably left it out for the Bold.

Do you want to tell me how much RAM the 9930/9900 has then?

Yes. 768MB for main apps, then the 6GB is an EMMC card

I posted this in the other thread about 188mb. I won't be posting again on this subject so hopefully you guys read an relay this.

RAM is NOT where applications are store. RAM is where currently running applications are stored. And even then the WHOLE application does NOT need to reside in RAM. Memory is moved in and out of RAM constantly depending on what needs to run. INTERNAL STORAGE is where applications are stored. When they are run parts of them move to RAM. When they are closed that RAM is freed. Please study up Memory Management/Pageing/RAM because a lot of you are very confused and flat out wrong about how the Operating System uses the different types of memory it has.

Ok, so then why does my RAM deplete and cause my phone to run slow when I install apps?

Ok, so if my 9000 has 1GB and 128mb is sectioned off for "apps" then the rest, approx 850mb is virtual memory for feeding the CPU or CPU cache. Right?

Installing applications does not deplete RAM, running them does. Please read up on RAM and what it actually is. Specifically you should be looking at the difference between RAM and ROM.

BBOS does not store applications in RAM. If that was true you would have to re-install your applications every time your battery died. I can't even name an OS that stores applications in RAM. In fact I don't know if there has ever been an OS that stored applications in RAM.

Without getting to in depth on memory management and operating systems. Virtual memory is basically extended RAM that the CPU doesn't actually execute from. Virtual Memory is loaded into RAM and then the CPU will start executing it. The reason for this is that RAM is exponentially faster and that speed is needed to follow and execute an applications code while not constantly stalling.

I don't know how exactly your 9000 would use its memory. Each OS is different. But the basics of RAM/Virtual Memory/Application Storage are the same. The OS itself would specify how much Virtual Memory was allowed etc.

I have a question which i can't find the answer to anywhere. the new bold 9900/9930 has 8gb onboard and 32 gb expandable. are these continuous or disjoint i.e. can i sync my phone with a 35gb music playlist?

this is the only reason i'm considering an upgrade.. i have about 35gb of music in my playlist and i want to know if i will be able to transfer these songs to my phone? or am i only given the 32gb for media?

no that ~850mb were/are for you to save picture etc. on it.

the 128mb which in my case the OS 5 needed 95 alone is for your apps.

If this was for the guy who 'explained' it totally wrong for bb os case then sorry

    btw

what are you all talking about?

You have on a 9000 128MB for the OS and for the applications - this is "taken" from the 1GB internal memory (which you can use for saving pictures etc. )

Of course this is not really RAM but if you ran out of this 128MB your BB is going extremely slow and will freeze. This happend me all the time with the 9000 running OS 5.

There are a few (or more less) apps which saves a few data on the memory card or the internal (in 9000: ~850MB) but still you easy have probs with how many apps you can run on a 9000 e.G. after reset of the device I had 25MB free. After an hour probably 10. At least every week the device frozen and I have to pull the battery.

And now the 9900 has around 700MB memory for your apps and the OS.

Sadly only ~200 are for apps as around 500 is used for the OS7 :/

I haven't opimized that at the moment as I have the 9900 only 2 days but I will and what I already have seen - alone the installed bb help is 19MB fat.

Sadly the Thread-Question is not answered here - as I also searching for "6 instead of 8GB internal memory" as all Infos about the device saying it should have 8GB internal memory but I can only save 6.2GB. Even if the 7xxMB have to be deducted of the 8GB again. It doesn't make sense.
