Using E-screen to change UMTS Bands Possible?

Hey i have a sim free unbranded unlocked Bold 9700

My Provider in thailand AIS uses the same bands as t-mobile 1,4,8
When i go into the escreen it shows

UMTS Bands Supported: 0
Set UMTS Supported bands

When i click on set UMTS Supported bands, i dont see any option for 1,4,8

Why is this. I have purchased an un-branded device with vendor id 602 [EDIT its actually 603]. This is a factory unit direct from RIM.

How can i set my UMTS (3G) Bands to work with AIS Thailand (900Mhz)

TMO US is UMTS band 4, your 900Mhz appears to be UMTS band 8.

i'm not familiar with vendor id 602, but tmo is vendor id 100

my understanding is their are two different 9700's, one that does 1,2,5,6 and another that does 1,4,8. they have different rf chips for the different set of umts bands

Hence 1,4,8 T-mo is 4 and mine is 8.. same setting though
I only have the option for 1,2,5,6 in different combinations.

Hmm RF Chip, so if i replace the RF Chip i should be ok, Is this a known fact or a guess, could it be software controlled?
RIM Bold 9700 Specs show that the phone supports all bands.

Is it possible that maybe with some clever hacking we could get it working somehow?

Vendor ID is 603. Its the Factory RIM V,ID.. No Carrier. Got it from Expansys.com

Since i've purchased the unbranded device at full retail, i should have the option of choosing which carriers umts band i want to use it on no?
In fact the device should just support all the bands simultaneously, anyways i know thats not possible, i just want to find some way to enable 1,4,8.

At this point i dont have any bands enabled (according to the escreen)

by different rf chip, i meant that there exist two different versions of the 9700. my understanding is that both chips do not exist in one 9700. but i could easily be wrong.

edit: it'd be interesting to know if both rf chips exists, and then if someday, someone figures out how to select which one to use

I have a T-Mobile branded 9700 and have the same options in the e-screen menu as you do. They don't seem to do anything either, at least on my device.

I was able to change the bands on my T-Mobile US branded 9700 while roaming in the UK the other week to 1,2,5 - I am not sure exactly how I got the bands to "stick" though.

After I had rebooted the handset - the options then appeared to change the bands back to 1,4,8. I then started to panic as I couldn't get the selection to stick. (I would make the selection then as soon as I exited it would lose the setting). I am not sure what I did but I think I made the selection then immediately rebooted the handset. I would play with it further but I am travelling tomorrow but if someone else has time - it's certainly possible!

I am very interested in this topic too because I bought my phone from AT&T, but I'm going back home to Hong Kong and I would like to see if it is possible to change the bands, which I believe uses the same as Tmob

Otherwise, if the bands are different, that makes the calls and reception worse right? and 3G can't be used? I'm quite confused with how the frequency differences work. I'm going back to Hong Kong soon, and I'm going to test out the phone, but I'm most likely going to sell my phone just to get a Tmob Bold 9700 unless there's something that can be done?

Sorry, one more question, so does band 1,4,8 refer to the Roman numerals of the wiki page?

Dude Relax, Changing bands only enables 3G service for data., voice calls all work regardless of what network youre on, no matter which version bold you have, all att, tmo, and unbranded bold 9700 support all gsm bands for voice.
Its only the data that has trouble with different networks...

Basically if youre using in hongkong, voice calls are not a problem,, and you will get a minimum of EDGE regardless of what network youre on.. so no need to worry bout selling your phone.

thanks redman12, another question... i live in venezuela and my 9700 doesnt work on 3g because is T-mobile... T-mobile uses 1,4,8 bands.. i need to get my phone to work in the1,2,5,6 bands so i can use the 3g network... is this possible?

Google E-screen generator or search the forums. You'll find it. Then, use a computer to enter the information and there you go. If you make a mistake and happen to brick your device, it isn't anybody's fault but your own.

I have find a valid escreen password, but I couldn't find "Set UMTS Supported bands" or UMTS. Where is it?

You cannot change a CDMA phone with 3G Roaming sim's frequencies.

No, it's not possible to change the bands. I have tried this numerous times with my windmobile (same as tmobile) bold 9900.
