I'm assuming it will be possible to have the GSM/UMTS side of the 9650 unlocked. I've always has GSM phones and got SIM unlocks from the carrier. I don't expect as much from Sprint though. And yes, I realise the GSM portion would only be 3G in Europe (2100 MHz), and only Edge here in the US (AT&T, T-Mo). My question is more for traveling abroad and having options for local SIMs.
What would be the best means to have the GSM portion of the 9650 unlocked - assuming it's possible (dunno how locked down Sprint has the 9650)
first get your 9650, then simply call cs to get it unlocked... sprint does not do the whole locked phones thing but the 9630 was locked by default so likely is the 9650 ..
sprint was not aware that the early 9630 were locked and in fact did not even have an inhouse process to provide the unlock code.. since all prior world phones were unlocked at source by the manf.. if you go check the sprint forums from july/aug you will see this to be the case...

i thought the gsm side could also be used in asia?
It can be used anywhere that has UMTS (GSM 3G) on 2100MHz band. So if parts of Asia use 2100, then yes. And also anywhere in the world on EDGE (850/900/1800/1900).

So....how does one know if their 9650 sim is locked or unlocked?
What about verizon, if you call them to unlock will they be as nice? or tell you no?
from my experience getting the Tour unlocked, they are not. I wasn't able to get any unlock codes from them; luckily i won a code to unlock through one of CB's contests.
I had no problems getting an unlock code from Sprint with my Tour. Just have to contact the international help line and state you are planning to visit outside the US and they set up the code. Simple and quick. Deal is to contact international services.

OPTIONS>ADVANCED OPTIONS>SIM CARD> TYPE MEPD ON YOUR KEYBOARD....look at where is says "network"...if it says "disabled" its unlocked...if it says "enabled" its locked

after options>advanced options>sim card, without typing anything this phone says "sim card: security disabled" and the next line says "id: big long number"
yeah but I knew this from unlocking my tour... however, when I get to the sim screen on the Bold and the MEPD I get nothing.. no response at all.

typing mepd doesn't give any results
Does that mean it's unlocked?
Same here, we should be getting a screen that has several status lines.
Under manage network connections>mobile network options>network technology there are gsm/umts, 1xev, and global options. If this is set for gsm/umts, then network mode pops up with 3g&2g and mobile network gives me different networks, including tmo and att and a gazillion others that look foreign.
It sounds like me the Bold is ready to travel, even if it's just across the street to Tmo

The Tour 9630 does the same thing and gives the list of 3g&2g networks. Typing MEPD in caps from the SIM Card menu will give the same results and show Security Disabled meaning that it is unlocked.
