I just bought an unbranded bold 9900 today. Unit is from Hong Kong.

When I use it, the back heats up. I haven't tried updating the OS yet.

But why is it that it heats up?

Faulty battery. The battery takes up all of the back panel, so really only thing it can be. Lithium ion batterys like to get hot if there's an issue.

thinner profile, it's the battery doing what it does. Mine gets warm also, nothing to fear.

I wouldn't be alarmed unless it is actually gets hot. Warm is normal.

As long as you did not buy it from any of the retail electronic shops on Nathan Rd. in Tsim-Sha-Tsui you should be fine. Those guys are quite well known for scamming tourists and visitors.
