I got my bold today, (with no data plan for right now) and i got the wifi at my house all setup and working. Was browsing the internet no problem. I take a trip over to school to do some homework and figure ill add their student network as well so it will automatically pick it up in that building. The bold let me add the network but wouldnt let me connect to it. I figured maybe the router is a Wireless N or something so i just deleted that router profile.

Now i get home and see no wifi symbol on the screen. Go to manage connections and wifi is off. Click the checkbox for it to turn on and it gets unchecked immediately. Try to go through the wifi setup wizard again but that requires wifi to be on, so while it is turning on it fails with a "Unable to turn Wi-Fi on" message...

Tried rebooting the device and same issue happens. Is this happening to anyone else? I thought maybe my battery was too low so i plugged it into the wall charger but same issue.

    Opinions on this problem?

Have you tried a battery pull/replace? Sometimes that knocks the cobwebs loose.

Had the same problem and I was advised to perform a clean wipe of the device and do not restore from previous BB as I did on my first go around. Since then device is more responsive and have no problems with WIFI except in my home as I have a finacy router (linksys WRT350N).

Keep track of your free memory in the Status part of the Options. The OS is a little leaky and if your free mem gets too low, it starts freaking out.

I do a couple ALT-RIGHTSHIFT-DEL resets a day to reclaim memory. Hopefully the next OS release(s) will plug some of the leaks.

Flash Memory - 128Mb - used to store operating system, applications, emails, messages, themes, caches, call logs, calendars, and some essential system stuff. When the system is running for a long period of time, the cache and page files left over by the applications will eat up this part of memory. Now RIM hasn't been able to get a good method to clean up the used trash (to reclaim the no-longer-used memory back).

This is why you have to do a battery pull or do a soft reboot to get some memory back.

Device Memory - 1Gb - (encrypted) internal storage place to hold multimedia files: video, audio, pictures, and etc.

Micro SD Card - up to 32Gb - (able to be encrypted) external storage to hold multimedia files: video, audio, pictures, and etc.

I tried the alt rshift del and when it came back on I got a bunch of errors about java. wi-fi did, however, come back. My email accounts were blown away though! I then turned it off and pulled the battery. When it came back on the email accounts returned - whew! But now wi-fi will not turn on. I have only had my bold less than a week and this does not give me much confidence. I am using the .167 OS which I believe is the latest.

I have an N router at home and don't have any problems connecting to it. Definitely upgrade to at least .185...

Where did you get those upgrades? On the BlackBerry site I used the upgrade software and it said I had the latest software (4.6.0.167) for my Bold. Desktop software is 4.6.0.13 which seems to be the latest I can get from AT&T.

Just got a AT&T BlackBerry 9000 Bold w/o any AT&T Data Plan since I'm overseas 2 weeks every month and would like to use the WiFi feature to connect to the Internet - just like what I do now with my Nokia E-71. No problem getting AT&T Tech Support in unlocking the Bold. Now the harder question w/c I thought was an easy one. I cannot connect to the Internet using WiFi. The phone detects and shows that I'm connected to my home wireless router but that's about it and keep getting, "unable to connect to the internet" message. No problem surfng the net w/ my E-71 using the same wireless router and AT&T SIM card. (Though my E-71 is only month old, I prefer the Bold's keyboard and wider screen.) The AT&T tech who helped me unlock the phone asked me to call BB Tech Support directly but they charge so I was referred back to the "right people" at AT&T, Advanced Network Services. I explained to the technician that all I wanted to do was connect to the internet using WiFi and he spent the next 30 minutes trying to sell me an AT&T data plan with reasons such as, "AT&T computers need to detect a data plan before your BB Bold can connect to the internet," and "when you're going overseas you can always sign up with the cheaper AT&T data plan."

Before I return this phone to AT&T is there really no way I can connect to the Internet w/o a data plan from AT&T? I understand the iPhone's requirement for a data plan before you can get one but that was not required on the BlackBerry. It's beginning to look like an AT&T bait-and-switch scheme.

    Appreciate any help. - JNR

Go to your "mobile network options" and make sure that "data services" are set to "on".
