From what I am aware of UMA is carrier dependent. For example in the USA T-Mobile supports UMA, however AT&T does not. A 9780 on AT&T's network in the USA would only allow a Wi-Fi connection not UMA. I'm not familiar with Orange, so I can't give you a definite answer. Oh, I noticed that you mentioned your partner has an 8520 and is on Orange as well so obviously UMA is supported on Orange. Are you using a Orange branded Bold 9780 or an unlocked 9780?

they are using an unlocked 9780 - that is on the orange network - shame as UMA is the only reason why we bought the phone, i have an orange 8520 branded phone

Does Orange do UMA? If not you wasted your money.

    Not all carriers allow UMA

I am on Orange UK and today I used Wifi and most of the time it was on UMA so it is supported by network provider. I am on Contract>

The 9780 does have UMA and Orange UK do support it but as its an unlocked device it wont work straight out the box. You need to adjust things in the engineer screen. This is something I don't recommend but you can read about this on Crackberry.

An Orange branded 9780 would work straight the box.

It's not difficult. Add the certificates and configure the settings in the escreen.

The unlocked blackberry 9780 does not display UMA or have a selection to prefer UMA calling. Is there a fix without returning the phone?

    Hi Tom,

You need to supply a few more details. The main things you need to get UMA working are:

Updated OS and Support from your SIM provider.

First make sure the OS is above version 650. I prefer .666 as I didn't like the .7xx OS versions. I am a HEAVY UMA user due to working in basements a lot. And owning a house with almost zero 3G coverage. So I stick to .666 for best results. (if you need assistance finding .666 and\or actually doing the upgrade, post back here)

(If your phone is new to you, <SHIFT><ALT><H> gets to the help screen. Look at App Version. My says 6.0.0.666 (2921). That is the .666 of OS you will see people talk about)

Next - check your phone provider actually supports UMA. Here in the UK only Orange (or EE) actually support it. It is not possible on Vodaphone or O2.

UMA has to be running on the ORANGE network.
don't be thinking you buy a orange branded phone and pop a different chip in it to get UMA.
