Has anyone tried to buy a Sprint/Verizon 9930 and unlocked it to use with AT&T? Looking at the specs, the 3G frequency bands for are the same as AT&T 9900:
Wrong, The Sprint/Verizon 9930 has DUAL RADIOS meaning it both CDMA & GSM radios (this is also true for Storms/Tours/Bolds)
Very true, but the GSM portion of the CDMA phones such as the S2/9930/9850 are meant to operate on networks out of the USA, not USA networks. You won't ever get 3G in America. Although the phone registers, it will only work on EDGE (2.5 G data speeds) and not UMTS, HSPA or the specific 3G that is supported by the GSM carriers. Do a forum search for unlocking a CDMA phone and you'll find more.
You want a GSM phone, wait on the GSM 9930 to drop or get a 9860.

The Blackberry 9930 from Verizon / Sprint is a CDMA device that can work on GSM, some carriers out side the USA will get the most out of it but if you are using At&t then the best option for you is to get a Canadian GSM blackberry 9900 from Rogers or Bell. then you can unlock your Blackberry and use it with 3G on at&t and far as i know it will work fine..
Other unlocked Blackberry devices such as the Verizon / Sprint CDMA Blackberry 9930 will work if unlocked but with T-Mobile / At&t you will get 2G connection (EDGE).
The 9930 will work with 3G on some networks outside the USA but, with T-Mobile USA / At&t the Blackberry 9930 from Sprint / Verizon will work only on 2G (EDGE) - not fast as 3G but it can still work as unlocked device and everything.
I think that Rogers Blackberry's are also can be a good option and they can be found in the US and far as i know it can work on 3G with at&t.
If you get the Verizon 9930 - after unlocking it you can change the CDMA settings on the screen that you can get by dialing ##000000.
With Sprint devices this screen is locked with a password and you will need to do SPC/MSL Unlocking to get that password after you have unlocked your Blackberry for GSM by MEP unlocking code.

Wrong. You simply need to be in an area where the tower req is 2100. In that case, you will get 3g.
It's no different than importing a Nokia N8 with a Pentaband radio and getting 3G on any GSM carrier in the world.
The 3 frequencies in that phone are balanced for World Usage, but if you are fortunate to live in an area where AT&T is using the 2100 band, you will get 3g on that phone.

There are T-Mobile phones that have an "extra" band that get 3G in some AT&T coverage areas, as well...

As a result, phones like the Tour, 9930, etc can only operate on 2g/Edge in North America when they are connected to a GSM network (AT&T, Tmobile, Rogers, etc..)

Make that +2 for the troof. As the other person who tried to prove me wrong said, "Facts are your friends" and the fact is you won't get anything faster than edge on an unlocked CDMA phone in the USA. The CB forums are full of posts stating that.
i have a sprint 9930 unlocked for t mobile only thing is that the web dosent work, and i have a bb data plan, evrything is working but the internet, i know you cant get 3g but at least egde but that isnt working either
i bought a bold 9930 from sprint. It was difficult to unlock because of the extra security they have. The normal unlock code (mep code) is not enough because it will only allow text messages and phone calls and no blackberry services such as internet and bbm. You also need a SPC / MSL which is more expensive than normal codes. After i entered this code it finally said att when i put my phone number (be careful because most sites only sell you the mep code, on ebay its easier and cheaper to find and itll say spc code.
My phone works but not as it should. I cant open mms messages and i can only use EDGE so its alot slower than using a normal att blackberry. I even called att and there is nothing they can do. Im thinking about selling it since i cant use it to its full capacity. Anyone know if theres a way to use the 3g on 9930 from sprint? is the 9900 any different or will it not work on that either?
I know att uses 850 and 1900mhz so the best bet is to buy the 9900 and hope it works, i havent gotten an answer if it will but i got the 9930 and it doesnt work 36 but then again the bands dont say 850 and 1900 like the 9900... i havent read anywhere that the 9900 wont work with att 3g... i know the 9930 doesnt.
