Like some other people, my speaker stopped working all of a sudden; music, alerts, basically anything that uses the speaker. However, I can get it to work by squeezing the phone with one finger on the blackberry logo near the top and one finger on the speaker portion on the bottom. This makes it clear that it's definitely a contact issue between the circuit board and speaker. I've seen fixes for this for the Bold 9000 but none yet for the 9700.

My question:
Has someone gotten away with a quick fix? (without taking it apart)

Or do I need to take it apart, and if so, what do I need to do once I'm there?

If it's in warranty, get a replacement....
That's better fix...

disassemble and make a fix and let us know about it.

I simply folded a piece of paper a few times and stuck it between the battery and cover and it's back to normal.

I had the same issue. Press (Gently) the area immediately above the screen and immediately below the ear speaker on "Blackberry". It did the trick for me and saved me the hassle of a refurb from Warranty or a new one from insurance by paying a deductible.
