- I don't get it..its been over a year since I got my 9700 and there isn't a worthwhile BB to upgrade to. After listening to the podcast on this site and hearing the guys say basically skip the Torch and the 9780 not to mention OS6 if you already have a 9700, I am starting to loose confidence in RIM.
And it didn't help last week when the co CEO was rambling about the Playbook and not really being able to answer any questions on where BBs are headed, my confidence sank a little more.
Come on, not everyone is going to rush out and get a playbook. I care more about your phones. So is RIM starting to divert their attention back to the business world after their crack to regular consumers isn't working out so well against competition from iOS and Android?
If they have a clear strategy in mind, they should let us know. I see a lot of potential with qnx in a bb but will they be able to deliver? I don't understand refreshs. Do any other competitive manufacturers do refreshs?
I really like my 9700 and want to make a true upgrade and not a lateral move to something like the 9780 imho. Is a touchscreen bold too much to ask? Would we ever see hardware from another manufacturer running bb? I'm sorry but I don't think the Playbook is going to help RIM at this point and I wish they would give us more info on new phones coming down the pipe.

- HTC, Samsung, Sony, Motorola and Nokia, etc. Also do refreshes and redesigns, so RIM isn't the only one playing that game. So just hold out, let it ride and within 5-10 years, there'll be a very good blackberry or other smartphone out there. I could easily go back to windows mobile, or just get a feature phone, only if I really want to, but i'm content with my blackberry right now. I'll just watch and see what flies and breezes by. It's always fun to mess around with them

I know everyone is different, but do you really need to upgrade your phone annually? What would make a new phone "compelling" for you? (Besides a touch Bold, as you mentioned) As for your other question, I doubt we'll ever see BBOS running on a device made by anyone but RIM. That is one of the qualities I like about RIM- they are somewhere between Microsoft and Apple on the software/hardware spectrum. I think that's all I have to say, but the alcohol is kicking in and I need sleep haha.

The PlayBook is designed to get into the tablet market obviously, but also hold customers over until QNX is ported to handhelds. Which is coming next year. Albeit not Q1. Look for PB news at CES & look for new handhelds at the BlackBerry World Conference.
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com12-13-10 06:56 AMLike 5 - No one ever said the 9800 or 9780 were not good upgrades. If you love your 9700, the 9780 is the perfect upgrade for you.
However, I have said that the 9780 is not a worthwhile upgrade FOR ME. Why not? I'm in a 2 year contract and would have to pay full price for it. If I could get it for under $100, I would jump on a 9780. But, by the time I can afford an upgrade, the 9780 will be a year old (Like the 9700 is now) and the next generation will be out.
I don't see RIM abandoning consumers. In the last few months we've seen the Torch, the Style, the new 9780 Bold, The Curve 3G series, and the new Pearl 3G....
How many new iPhones did Apple put out this year? ONE! And, even then, they could never get anything but the black version out!
We see the Torch 9800 in black, white and red, the 9780 in black and white, the Style in black and purple, not to mention the different colors of the pearl and curve 3G's.12-13-10 07:09 AMLike 0 - RIM is not abonding you or your 9700. There will still be continues support for it and you will still continue to see leaks. Maybe not from carriers though as carriers have moved towards the later devices like the 9800 and 9780, how does that matter to you? You can still find your udpates and support here on CB12-13-10 07:20 AMLike 0
- Great to read a lot of good responses. It's probably true that I don't need a new phone every year and I'm satisfied with my 9700 and all of its customizations. However coming onto this site and also many other tech sites, you start to see a gap between where we are and where the competition is.
I think the deal breaker for me not upgrading to the 9780 is that I think OS6 should be used with a touchscreen device. This sentiment is echoed in the podcast (if you haven't heard it already)...and that OS5 is more productive on the Bold. Which brings to question why the other touchscreen BB hasnt' gotten OS6...ie the Storm.
Maybe RIM is going through a lot of changes now and it'll take a year or two before they have a clear idea of where they are headed. I just hope that many of us are still around then!12-13-10 11:13 AMLike 0 -

I'm pretty happy with my 9650 on 6.0 and then with my tax money I'm gonna get a Playbook, and then in June my Verizon NE2 is due, and THEN well, we'll see what's out there, BUT that's right after the conference formerly known as WES right?12-13-10 10:25 PMLike 0 - Personally, I like this because I just recently (3 months ago) got a 9700 and love it. No need for it to be obsolete anytime soon12-14-10 12:09 AMLike 0

- I came across this article today that pretty much mirror's my sentiment. Alas I am aware that Engadget are Apple fanboys (imho), the editorial was from a diehard BB user.
Take it for what it is but I really hope RIM innovates in the next quarter or two.
