The guy told me Sept 15, were getting there!
I would love if it hit rogers on that day...its my birthday :)
Can't wait!!!
This is great news! I'll cancel my AT&T Blackberry account for this...
That date was from BGR and the rep used that info. It's not going to happen sadly. It will be at least late October before we see the Driftwood on T-Mobile.
So I understand there is a lot of pressure to get 9700 out to the masses. There is a big push at T-Mobile to get this out before at&t. at&t is leaning on it's field testers to get this device approved so they can beat TMO. Here's the rub...
CX correct me if I am sideways here. TMO's version will be 3G on the 1700mhz band only so it will only work on 3G where TMO has 3G coverage. It won't roam on at&t's 3G network. AT&T operates 3G on both it's 850 and 1900mhz bands. AT&T believes if it can release this device at the same time or before TMO then it won't lose any significant customers to TMO because at&t's 3G foot print is much bigger and faster...
PG
i dont mind when they release it. if they need another month or two, great! take it. i just hope they release another dud...they dont need anymore bad PR
PG, your words are music to my ears.
yeh,i really need this phone to come out around that time too. i mean as long as it comes out before the end of this year,im fine with that.but a release date from Tmo for around october-November would be fantastic for me. XD
You're correct. T-Mobile's 3G will be operating on 1700 which is AWS and that's the frequencies that they will have over the Onyx's 850/1900 3G which is what AT&T uses. AT&T will end up beating T-Mobile badly on this device to market. I don't want that to happen, but this is the same T-Mobile that rejected the Bold, the same T-Mobile that had the audacity to have the Wing priced as it was (that refreshed Wizard) when the Touch Pro was out in the same timeframe and was leaps and bounds better, the same T-Mobile that got a refreshed Wizard instead of the TyTN in early 2007, the same T-Mobile that rolls out 3G in 2008, the same T-Mobile that only had the G1 as its only 3G smartphone for 6-8 months, etc... I could go on and on about T-Mobile's incompetency compared to AT&T. I really hope that T-Mobile will get this BlackBerry first or be one of the first. That will make up for the lack of the Bold in my mind.
if sept15 is the date, we are only 34 days away, and counting...

I heard Europe will be getting the Onyx first...does this mean it may be here before sep 15?!
yea well just to let all of you guys know if there isn't any news about this new black berry on there website by august 25th then there is not going to be that phone coming out any time soon don't get me wrong but that is how it is have you guys noticed they have a 3 week delay or 2 weeks on new phones for example the sidekick 09 comes out then about 2 weeks later they have a advertisement for the my touch. so yea i wouldn't say it coming out in September
Ii doubt a sept release, tmo would know better than to saturate their smartphone offering so quickly as to throw people off. They just released the 8900 not a hella long time ago, then the Mytouch, then 8520 and now the TP2: Way too many smartphones in a small amount of time (not that it is a bad thing).
Besides, working in a mobile phone industry, one would know how people are with their smartphones/dumbphones, they want the lastest and greatest, very few people actually settle for less than what is available. At tmobile, customers dont care much about the 8520s or the 8320s, they always go for the 8900s since its only about $20 more than the 8520.
When this lands, people will ignore all the other berries on tmo and go straight for this thanks to the fancy of having 3G. Though i do have a feeling that tmo will charge an arm and leg for the 9700, just like the 8800/8820 when they dropped. :(
As far as Im aware pre production Onyx units were tri-band UMTS 850/1900/2100
so whether they've swapped a band, or all units are quadband UMTS with some bands disabled, or what, I don't know, but it stands to reason that both devices will roam on 2100mhz UMTS as thats the global standard, so maybe all Onyx's are quadband UMTS with different bands disabled depending on carrier.
Just my 2cents.
Would be uneconomical to make a handset with loads of different chipsets to support different bands, be simpler to just pump out quad band umts/edge units and disable bands/features as needed.
This was my thinking as well.......I don't understand why there arent quadband 3g phones right now......
