I currently have a 4gb card in my Bold I want to upgrade
    To a 8 or a 16 and put my 4gb into the wife's Curve 8900
what do I need to do to ensure I save all my data
Presently on the 4gb and how do I format it for the wife's Curve?

I would create a folder on my PC desktop and drag everything there, then just drag it back onto the new card.

Not sure about the Curve question. I would suppose you could put it in the phone and format there.

I second that on creating a folder on PC. While you have it hooked up to PC after you move the files to the folder just format it then.

I back the Bold up daily with DM (because I m still making minor changes to the setup, contacts etc...
But you mean place the Micro SD in the holder and reader and just a straight drag drop to a new file then format in place right?

My daughter has a 8330 from verizon, the 8 gig card works fine with it. And the folder on the pc is a perfect solution and easy.

like he said, simple as drag and drop, and then drag and drop after formatting. enjoy the extra memory space!

You mentioned you're deciding between an 8 or 16 gb micro SD card. You might want to note that the Bold supports up to 8gb. I don't know that a 16gb card would work.

When you install a bigger card will that allow
You to DL more apps and still run well?
I know they run in the RAM but where will they
    Live when not in use?

You're right! When I shopped around for memory cards, I used (what turns out to be) outdated information from gsmarena.com. Damnit! I bought an 8gb card thinking it was the max my phone could handle when it totally depends on the OS. I found this when I googled it:

BlackBerry Device Software Media Card Size Limit
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.0 Up to 2 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.1 Up to 4 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.2.2 Up to 4 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.3.0 Up to 8 GB
    BlackBerry Device Software 4.5.0
    Up to 8 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.5.0.81 and later Up to 16 GB
BlackBerry Device Software 4.6.0 and later Up to 32 GB

    Sorry for the misinformation!

What you store on the card will have no effect on app memory.
