This is not the only cause of battery loss, but this is A MAJOR cause of it that doesn't make a lot of sense.

Custom themes in general seem to kill the battery life overall... I'm not talking about animated themes or even anything including .svg files at all...

My themes are very simple in design, dock icons, maybe today items and wallpapers.

I get drastically higher battery drain over the course of the day than I do with AT&T precision. Makes no sense really. I haven't tracked down what exactly in the customization drains the battery (amount of custom icons, etc) but it does seem to happen.

    What kind of a difference?
-My battery is dead by about 9pm or so after taking it off the charger in the morning WHETHER I USE THE PHONE OR NOT... That's the kicker, using it kills it faster, but it still dies quite fast even if I don't.

This is pretty annoying though as it basically limits what I can do to my homescreen without a massive sacrafice.

Again you could be killing your battery with all sorts of other things so don't expect this to necessarily 180 your battery life.

I've always used custom themes and my battery life has been great. During a normal day my battery drains less than 50% (6am - 10pm).

Not to threadjack, but I would add properly closing apps. Good idea to start this thread, it comes up too much.

Also, turn down your backlight brightness. The difference between 20 and 100 is negligible and save mucho battery.

I've found that AutoStandby does wonders for battery life.

    Another battery killer, Youmail app.

The theme thing is tough because it might be certain aspects of a theme that aren't working like they should on the bold...

Does anyone want to compile this into a single thread and manage it a little for sticky status? This would help EVERYONE new and old. I know there's something similar somewhere else but this could be specific to Bold. I can do it later but on WAP now, watching the Lakers.

EDIT: In fact we need a memory and battery sticky.

I 2nd the YouMail being a HUGE battery drain! HUGE! I'm finding having the Latitude turned on with Google Maps is also a killer as well.

I don't even understand why anyone would want or need to use the YouMail application, lol. As for Google Latitude....I stopped using it after a day.

I've definitely noticed how certain themes drain my battery. I'm also trying to notice if berryweather does the same thing.

Now that I think about it, the icon animations might be causing drain.

Even if you aren't using an "animated" theme, the icon animations might be causing an issue (which sucks if that's the case).
These themes shouldn't be causing significant battery drain.

I agree on all the posts. I say...

    1. Turn off WIFI and Bluetooth if not needed.
    2. Turn off key sound.
    3. Let the LED screen turn off ASAP.
    4. Play less music and videos.

It's business phone, not a play toy. My secondary phone (Nokia E75) is used for listening to music and surfing even then I use less than 30% of it's battery from 6am - 10pm. I work from 7am - 7pm Monday - Friday and occasionally on Saturday and Sunday. I use my office phone quite often during the day though when I'm on the shop floor I use my Bold.

From what I can gather, the WiFi radio uses less battery than the 3G radio....
I leave my wifi on all the time and notice no real hit on battery life.

Any app that use Position/Location Awareness (GPS) will hit your battery hard.

For example I had the "Use internal GPS option" enabled in UberTwitter, even though I had none of other location awareness setting turned on, and I found it drained my battery surpringly quickly. I turned the option off and me battery life was back to what I was used to.

I have to second this.... wifi is not a drain, in fact, I think it's a battery saver. My wifi connection uses way less juice in a day that a straight-up 3G connection, and I am in a very strong 3G area - never have a dropped call or an interruption in service.

I agree with your opening point, Papped. I have tried only about 3-4 themes, none of them complicated or animated, and they always end up draining my battery. And I always delete them and go back to the defaults.

I will third that then. Wi-Fi is definetly a battery's best friend. Almost a booty call for the battery. That's how much battery loves Wi-Fi. I'm in a strong, strong 3G area coverage area at work and it doesn't even compare to my Wi-Fi (DSL router).

As far as themes, I just stick with the original "Precision Silver" theme on both of my phones now.

Papped is on to something about the animated icons. Plus, people run different themes all the time instead of sticking with one.
