Please help me understand - BB abroad
I am going to Israel soon and here is where I'm at.
My 9700 is unlocked and obviously I want to have a 'fully functional' BB everywhere I go, including outside the U.S., but the fact of the matter is it is more of a "want" rather than "need". Sure, it could help, but it does not justify the (outrageous in my opinion) rates that AT&T charges.
I checked with the two major cell providers in Israel - you can only add BB service to a standard line, not a 'chargeable' type number (like AT&T's GO).
So apparently I will not have OTA access to BB services. I am not 100% sure how this thing works.
1. Say I use my AT&T card just for phone service - in order to prevent data usage, do I just turn 'Data Services' OFF and that should be it? Will I be able to make/receive calls normally? (I am aware the per-call charge is high, but at least I won't be charged for emails).
Can I leave it ON and just turn 'While Roaming' OFF...? Will this be enough to prevent BB Service while outside the U.S.?
2. BTW - the BB-logo-like icon, between the 3G and the Cell bar, is that the Data icon? It goes off when I switch 'Data Services' OFF. When 'Data' is off I still have the 3G icon on.
3. What happens if I use a local SIM card? Do I still need to turn 'Data' OFF, or will the BB know that that specific SIM card does not have BB services?
4. How does WiFi get in the picture? Can you get BB services via WiFi (when I am not on the road, but in a WiFi range), and if so - how do I tell the BB to use WiFi only and not OTA? I read that the BB will always use WiFi as first priority, but I noticed several times that when I at home and WiFi is on, sometimes the browser will use the 3G network and not the WiFi.
Sorry for the long post. I just want to make sure I take full advantage of my BB without the need of a second mortgage when I return to cover the AT&T bill.
Thanks in advance.
