I got a message from Rogers about an update for BB Bold. So, I figured I'd check it out.

I downloaded it and installed it on the desktop. Then I connected my device, switched on desktop manager and clicked on update now.

It started to update but after about reaching the quarter mark, it gave me this error that there was not sufficient memory in my device.

I checked Bold and I have:
    - Application Memory 1 MB free
    - Device Memory: 858 MB free
    - Media Card: 3.7gb free

I don't know why application memory is so low. Could it be wrong? Also, why is device-memory different from application-memory?

I only have MobiPocket Reader, and Viigo installed. All my ebooks (for mobipocket reader) are in the media card.

    Any advises?

Try removing viigo. It's a huge resource hog.

Ok. But I know other people have viigo and they haven't had problems. I mean with just a couple of 3rd party apps, how can my application memory be so low?

Is there a way to merge device memory with application memory? They both are onboard on the device.

That's an ignorant statement to say that others don't have problems. There are other discussions on here about Viigo eating up a lot of memory.

There isn't a way to merge the memory systems. Let me run you down my memory speech.

Check your free memory: Options / Status / File Free:

What you are describing is typical of the problems caused by low available memory. Any time "File Free" drops below 12 000 000 bytes, the phone will start deleting call logs and text messages without warning to free up memory. Text messages may be deleted as soon as they arrive, before you have had time to read them.

A battery pull recovers memory and will alleviate the problem temporarily. The solution is to remove the stuff you don't need (the sample video, wallpaper, themes, other languages, brickbreaker, etc.) from the device's memory. The following procedure, originally written by Forums Moderator Reed McLay will guide you:

Also, if you have a Media Card, be sure to put pictures, videos, music, and ringtones on it, not in your device's memory. Keep in mind that Media Card memory is not device memory. You have to keep your device memory above 12 000 000 bytes, regardless of the capacity of your Media Card or how much free space it has. Finally, you can't at this time run programs from a Media Card. Programs have to be installed in and executed in device memory.

Viigo is one of the most common causes of memory problems in systems that otherwise would appear to be stable with ample free memory. My recommendation is to delete viigo for a few days and see if the problem goes away. Then you can make an informed decision whether it's worth keeping.

The link sunkast posted will take care of everything else.

If you always have less than 12mb, on a device that allows ~128mb for applications you have a serious issue. You should follow the link posted above.
