I was at the AT&T store yesterday and was looking over the current berries they offer and thinking about whether or not to wait for the Onyx. The sales rep asked me if I was interested in anything and I told him I planned on waiting for a rumored upcoming phone called the Onyx. He did a little research and said the Onyx is just a 3G 8900. From what I have read that doesn't seem to be right. They are different in more than just 3G correct?

Similarities:
- Display: 480x360
- Connectivity: WiFi
- Camera: 3.2 MP with auto focus. image stabalization, 2X zoom, and flash

Differences:
- Processor: It was mentioned that the Onyx seems faster than the Bold, which is faster than the Curve
- Keyboard: seperated QWERT keyboard (Onyx features the Bold/Tour style keyboard)
- Connectivity: 3G on Onyx


Everything else seems standard BlackBerry. Considering it is being labeled the 9020, I would say it is an upgraded Bold, not Curve. If I am wrong, please correct me. Thanks

The 8900 doesn't have 3G, it runs on EDGE.

So you happen to know the Onyx as the same processor as the 8900? Do you actually have real knowledge of this?

You would be incorrect on that. People that have it confirmed it is a faster processor than the bold, which is faster than the 8900, there are other differences also.

Generally speaking it will look similar to the 8900. The display may be similar as well but having 3G will be the big difference. It is a bold upgrade with the look and feel similar to the 8900.

It's the same size as the 8900, the chrome bezel is dark chrome instead of silverish, keys are in Bold style, CPU is max 624MHz. Display is the same as on the 8900. Works quite well on .124, although there are some issues with WiFi and I had some hickups on A2DP this morning.

No one has confirmed anything. The only "fact" that people have stated is that it seems as fast as, if not more, than the bold. That could mean it has the same processor, or that because the browser is newer it runs faster etc...

People all said the Tour had a faster processor and it clocked in at 524 mhz when it released. So I would reserve judgment.

So far, the only difference between the Onyx and Curve 8900 is that the Onyx uses a Bold-style keyboard and has 3G. That's it. That's all that is really confirmed. The rest is speculation. People still don't know whether it will definitively have a trackpad or trackball.

No date yet but pretty much anybody that carries the bold plus T-mobile will be getting the driftwood.

Onyx will be upgrade of the Bold folks. It will not be the Curve series.

And why is that? The only difference it has from the curve is the keyboard and 3G... Otherwise, it's almost the same when it comes to size and features.

True, it will have 3G and basically will function as an upscale 8900 + 3G in the real world. Many of the geek specs like how fast the processor is will be barely perceptible improvements to everyday users.

My decsion would be based on how good 3G service was in my area. There wouldn't be much point in buying a device with fast internet (and paying a premium for the phone) if the service was not even reliably available in the areas you spend most of your time. The 8900 can be had for $150 bucks at T-mobile.

It's true these newer devices seem to overlap a lot more than they used to. I would consider whether or not 3G was even reliably and widely available in my to help me choose. If not, I would probably "make due" with an 8900 and be happy. If I live in a metro area with strong 3G service I would go for the Onyx. Last thing the world needs is slower internet.

if i were you i would wait a few more weeks and see if we have a confirmation of the onyx chipset and feature set then i would make my decision

It's not all about the looks, it's about the performance. When the Onyx comes out, it will be RIM's flagship device. As for trackball or trackpad, both are being tested so it's not final. Trackpad isn't bad at all, and I think I prefer it now.
