    BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.1149 (EastAsia)

    Package Version: 5.0.0.1149
    Consisting of:
    Applications: 5.0.0.680
    Software Platform: 5.1.0.160
    File name: 9700jEastAsia_PBr5.0.0_rel1149_PL5.1.0.160_A5.0.0. 680_Hutchison.exe
    File size: 128.04MB
Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

    Download Software here

Instructions for installing on ANY carrier's 9700:

    1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
    2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
    3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

You beat me posting this by 3 minutes, you bugger!

The CB front page says Hutchinson has removed it.
I just checked and it's still there. It's the 3rd one down.

    Sorry Elite

...and yup, it's definitely still there.

RIM seem to like hiding the newer releases amongst the older ones on their download site for some strange reason.

It's the 2nd OS down in the 9700 section. Maybe they just need to sort the files - duh.

Slower to boot and consumes more memory than 656. Prefer the older one perhaps. Still to discover any other issues.

Maybe the difference was languages in the different 656 "versions" being compared by each of you to the same version of 680...?

    And welcome aboard, vagabanda!

Somehow dutch language isn't available in this release (first time for me), appworld isn't available so you have to download it again, Shazam and Whatsapp both work in this release, update went pretty quick and boottime seems same as .656

One item of note: Bolt is way faster. From boot up to rendering, a quite noticeable improvement.

    That's an easy fix

Just delete the .dat files from your media card...

Files > My Files > Media Card > BlackBerry > (Menu) Show Hidden > system > media > then delete the thumbs116x116.dat and thumbs480x360.dat files
