I finally got a chance to hold and try both models side by side, and it's amazing what a difference the extra 2mm width of the 9650 makes to the keyboard. It is considerably better and more like the original Bold 9000.
Blackberry make a mistake in shrinking down the Bold 9700 too much. It really should be a few mm wider to optimise the keyboard - which is one of the key diferentiating features of the Bold series. The extra size would also prevent Blackberry losing valuable corporate customers who really need a great keyboard and don't mind a more substantial device.
The new bold does not have the same feel as the 9700, but what's on the inside matters most. The new Bold absolutely kills the 9700 in memory, speed, and functionality as a whole.

The 9700's processor is roughly 100MHz faster than the 9650.

I said this back when the 9700 first launched, except then I was comparing the 9700 with the Tour 9630. The Tour... Ahem, BOLD form factor is far more proportionate than the 9700 IMO, and aside from the 9000, I feel the 96XX series is the best lay out and design of any BB.

The 9650 is the same size as the 9000 I believe and the 9000 was a hit because of its large keyboard, screen, and style. That's why people are excited to get their hands on the 9650 and of course the new features too :P but unfortunately its a CDMA only phone

Is 9650 the really the same size as 9000?

The 9700, 9000, and 9650 are not all the same. Between the 9700 and 9650, the 9650 is probably the better device (by the numbers). It has double the memory of the 9700, which is by far the biggest improvment. Now that's not saying that the 9700 is a bad device, it's not, it's a fine device, but they're not the same...
