What is the light or round window to the left of the led notification light?

Yesterday it was noticeably pulsating, today it's dark (I've had multiple restarts since.)

Is this the proximity sensor, and if so, why is it noticeable at times? It flashes in dim red.

Yes it is the proximity sensor, It will flash a dim red while on a call. The same thing happens with the track pad except it will flash just after being covered. I dont know how they work and thats all the information I have. If I helped click the thanks button!
