    Maybe I did shrink out the Universal Search. I will reload the OS. Once again, thank you for all your help. Much appreciated.

    OK. Been running 723 for 20 days now and decided tonight to drop back to 668.

    Over the 20 days, starting with exactly the same shrink as for 668, the free memory has slowly dropped from 108 mb to 82 mb. Not too bad I suppose with no battery pulls or soft resets, but when I ran 668 through Dec & Jan, I could run for a month without it going below 92 mb. The memory management was far superior. It would drop down into the low 90's and then jump back up to the high 90's without any intervention.

    At no time did 723 re-gain any free memory.

    In all other respects, I can't report any difference between the two OS's, apart from the OS7 "lookalike" with "Turn all connections off" now being "All off".

    Anyone else experienced this fact?

    Brian, just checked on BB Boss and there is no option to shrink Universal Search.

    did you try "reupgrading"? sometimes i've not gotten a complete install..
    Also check in the "installed apps" on your desktop software that all that should be there is there (the part which controls the apps on your blackberry).

    maybe i will, 706 also feels "heavy" on my device.
    but the problem for me is that reinstalling os will cost me my bbgroups. i have 12 groups and everytime i reinstall, i will need to ask them to reinvite me again
    but the problem with 668 is that i can't find 9700j os with japanese input support. i once tried to use the cjk from 666 but it doesn't work.

    interesting. even if you backup the bb-database to the simcard before and reimport it? (from within the messenger options).
    Huge flaw if thats not part of the backup.

    Well said, and i'm gonna have to go with you on this. 668 by far is still the most reliable OS6 for my 9700 too. Not sure about this fact but i did reckon the last reliable one for me before was .448, and now its .668 .. will there be another perfection called .888 far in the horizon?

    I agree with you on that one. I ran 448 for a long time and it was the one I kept going back to after trying all the others, untill 668 arrived on the scene. My upgrade will soon be due so I think I will stick with 668 now for the duration.

    bbgroups can't be backup just like that. it only backup the contact list.
    the groups will be restored after the handset is connected to rim server again.
    but terribly, not all groups are restored successfully.
    usually there are still more than 5 groups "recovering x groups" remaining, so i need to ask someone to "kick" me from the group and re-invite it again

    anyone know about 6.0.0.722 from starhub ?

    Sir... I know this question is asked several times. But I still didnt get it. Im about to update my Bold 9700. When I delete the Vendor.xml file, I start app loader but then after selecting and deselecting the apps, I still cant update my phone. It says you have updated the OS but has still the same OS 5. Help me if you can.

    When I delete the Vendor.xml file...
    Have you only deleted one vendor.xml file? Just curious because there are two that need to be deleted. On Windows 7 (64bit) the files are located in the follwoing directories;

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader

    &

    C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\Blackberry\Loader XML

    My suggestion would be to uninstall the update you have on your hard drive and start from scratch. Go to Control Panel > Programs and Fetures and uninstall the OS from your computer;

    Then execute the OS update you've downloaded and delete the vendor files. When you open up the BlackBerry Desktop Software and connect your phone it should indicate that an update is available. If for some reason it does not and you know that both vendor.xml files have been deleted, then just go to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader' and double click on the 'Loader.exe' file to begin the process while bypassing the Desktop Software.

    My other suggestion would be to just download BB Boss v2.2. This program will allow you to shrink the OS giving your phone a lot more available memory. This is especially crucial on the 9700 which doesn't have very much memory to begin with. BB Boss will also delete the vendor files for you making the process that much easier. Just stay away from the advanced users portion of the program as you could possibly brick your phone by removing those from the OS.

    Hope this helps!

    i had used 723 for about a month and downgraded back to 688.

    the battery life was actually worse then 688 and once the OS settled in, i lost memory so quickly that once it hits 20meg, the OS has an annoying delay that is NOT the clock of death. it got quite annoying that i went and downgraded back to 688
