Blackberrycool.com had this posted on their website last night and were right on about it!

RIM CANNOT be happy about the way the North American retailers are handling this release with Rogers today and the disaster AT&T is turning it into.

I do not understand this. On the date of the iPhone launch, there were people lined up outside of every ATT store in America to purchase this phone. Now, what if this had been the case with the Bold? Would people have simply been turned away? "Sorry guys, no Bold for you!"

This is ridiculous. IMHO, all this ish is really going to hurt sales. People will still buy the Bold, I know, but I definitely do believe that there will be several individuals who will be so fed up by the time the Bold actually hits retail stores, that they will have ventured elsewhere and purchased a different device. RIM/Rogers are billion dollar corporations.. You would think that a little business savvy and professionalism would be in their repertoir.

I dont really think it will hurt sales. At the end of the its the same for pretty much all big phones when they are released. Every month I go back and forth until I can get my hands on the handset I am looking for when its released. And if you look at how many places the Bold has to be distributed to as well as the fact that its not being sold in one place, like an apple store so I dont think its that big a deal. If I can arrange from the middle east for some one to go and order one then pick it up for me in Holland, then it cant be that much of an ordeal for someone to look and call around in their hometown if its released.

The iPhone isn't exclusively sold at Apple stores.. Obviously you can buy them at any authorized ATT retailer. So how does that make sense, or am I reading what you said wrong..?

I totally agree with you and I will take it a step further... with RIMs position in the smart phone market which is still quite a bit above Apple's, RIM could apply the same type of pressure on Rogers and AT&T that APPLE does to insure a release IS a release... not a constant changing of dates, etc. Another thing to consider, its interesting that here in the US that were hearing about all these 3g iPhone issues and that didnt stop ATT from releasing the iPhone right on time but whatever "issues" the Bold has made AT&T delay the release now for 2 months.

Sorry you are correct. I forgot about that. That said, I still dont find it a big deal that the phone is not there in 1 store that someone has gone to first thing in the morning of the launch.

I agree with what you are saying. However, for the sake of conversation, let me address the latter part of your post. How much of a good thing is it that ATT/Apple went ahead with the release date with existing/known issues regarding the iPhone? Is it better to stay firm on a release date, or make sure you are putting out the best quality device you possibly can?

Just making sure I wasn't having a blonde moment.

True, that is one store that the OP visited. However, the phone isn't available on the website, other locations, or via CS. So really, we are talking about a general non-availability all across Canada. Not just one store. As a consumer, if I were to go to a Rogers store to purchase a new phone which was to be released on this date, and I wasted my time just to arrive and find it unavailable, I would be p*ssed.

A good friend of mine is a manager for ATT, and he said that the preparation that went into making sure the iPhone was in stock and ready to be sold was nothing short of bedlam. Is there any reason that Rogers could not have been better prepared?

I agree with you I would rather wait for a quality device then get one that needs updates immediately. That said, it does show AT&Ts lack of concern about holding back a product that is overhyped as they would rather hit the street date. Also, I think were way past the Bold delays being only about performance issues. Seems to me now Rogers thought they were fine not 2 days ago, but didnt deliver on time OR decided at the last minute they needed another update. Either way, there is no arguing that both Rogers and AT&T have done a horrible job releasing this product and an even worse job informing their customer base with ACCURATE information.

I think the difference is the consumer based customer of the iPhone 3G, and the business professional of the blackberry.

More business buy the blackberry so its important that networks get it right, as they are going to losing a large chunk of their business.

The iPhone is much more mass driven, so if their were faults with it, I believe most people would have bought it regardless.

I received my bold this morning, live in the UK, after an awful launch, and no real preparation for the demand of the phone.

Let me tell you...i went to ATT to get the iPhone originally...but ended up at an apple store..at least they knew what they were talking about, courteous and did att's job better than any att rep i have ever been in contact with!

But regarding the BOLD. It really is awful. Your only choice is ATT, and it keeps getting pushed back. It's a poor situation. I don't think it will hurt sales too bad either. People who want the bold will get the bold, but i think people that are on the fence will get whatever device comes out first whether it be the javelin or thunder...etc.

    OH BOY.

At the end of the day, i just wanted to give my 2 cents, which is relax... when it comes it comes.... especially for you guys in the states, it could be delayed for a number of reasons, or 1 reason but you cant compare it to the iphone or anything else. Maybe they are having network issues with it, or maybe its perfectly fine and they just want to put some space between the launch of the iphone and the Bold. I am sure their are a lot of people who have bought the iphone and are not that happy with it and will go for the bold as soon as its launched. Or maybe RiM is doing what every other manufacturer does and concentrating on the rest of the world first.... it could be any of those things or none.
I am sure my carrier, or even anyone in the region will not be releasing the Bold for at least 3-6 months but I am not going to complain about it, I am putting all my energy into getting my hands on one by any means. This what I like about HTC, Nokia and others, they never give definite release dates, so we are never disappointed.

It hasn't been pushed back. It's never actually been given a release date by AT&T. You're getting caught up in the rumor-mongering. Just like me and about a million other eager wannabe-users! I think we'll get a firm date officially from AT&T pretty soon. With other carriers around the world releasing it they can't be far behind. It just takes time to add their own special dash of bloat-ware to the OS. Man, I HATE that crap!

Your last paragraph IS the point I think most of us are making. I dont believe most of us are really complaining "when" it will get here... but angry with the lack of accurate information we are being given by OUR INDIVIDUAL CARRIERS. No release date, no pricing information, rumors on top of rumors, then a release date from Rogers that starts at the 19th, then the 21st, now they dont even have the hardware in stores. I'm NOT EVEN a Rogers customer... I'm with AT&T which is even worse because no matter who at AT&T you ask you get a different answer. Thats what's getting most of us angry, their total disregard for their customer base.

And I totally disagree with your idea that they wanted "space" between launches. In actuality, any retail specialist would tell you competitors sales HELP ALL SALES within the store. Meaning, AT&T would want as many available hardware options in their store while they were getting iPhone traffic. More options are always more sales. Then again, seems lately Apple has a large part of how AT&T is being run these days.
