I have dial from home screen disabled, yet when I press any key but Q (Qsms) and A (lock), it asks me if I want to assign a speed dial - I can't get all those shortcuts I have read about to work! Like 'x' for calculator, etc.

I am on .282 T Mobile UK.

Any ideas?

To use shortcuts, just press the key.
It sounds like you are pressing AND holding the key which will ask you to asking a speed dial.
