Hi,

I prefer to read my email in white fonts over black background.

The only way I know to do this by going to: Options/Advance Options/Accessibility menu and change the Color Contrast to "Reverse Contrast"

The problem in doing this, is that all the theme and wallpapers will turn into/look like a photo negative ... very ugly.

Any advice on how to change email background without affecting theme and wallpaper settings?

Don't think there is a way other than what you mentioned. I could be wrong though.

It can be done in a custom theme, but there is no 'on-device' way to change it.

Kronk is right,only a theme can do this and even then you would have to select "theme controlled"within the settings
