pics are taken on auto ,with digital zoom ao,image stabilization on, 2560x1920,in my house the lights are on,because the time here is 23.00

Thank you for posting those pictures wsg - I'm afraid it is as I feared - the camera w/out AF takes close up shots of text....
....About as good as a 3 year old phone with a 2mp camera.

My guess is that it would be worthless for taking shots of paint / body damage on cars....
...For the purpose of damage reports required by Ins. companies.
...And about equally worthless for taking a shot of personal notes / documents.
    ...WOW!

I gotta be totally honest and say those pictures look pretty bad from the 9930. Maybe a flash would help in that situation? Not for the fuzziness but for the low light.

From my understanding, since you have 5MP, which is a large resolution to play with, you are supposed to take pictures from 30-40 cm back and then crop it. It would be better so you can get a clear shot but then zoom in digitally afterwards. It might look far away on your screen since it is small, but in reality, you have a lot of area to zoom in on. Just a tip.

Also, if there is an option for close up shot or macro shot, try using that and see if it makes it any better.

The pearl is clearly the winner there. I really hope RIM did more with the final release. Software optimizing or something....

If #00011 is indeed the picture taken by 9930 our question has been answered...
...Previous RIM device came with much higher quality cameras!
...Look at the difference between how the Pearl and 9930 renders the black of the pwr cord.

    Sounds good.

I am just a little concerned with the camera still. I am excited about everything on the phone except this is bothering me a little.

I hope since it seems to be more software based, that it will improve with updated software.

Everything I've been able to read about the keyboard indicates it's the best RIM has ever produced and there is no doubt they have that part of it down Pat!

I'm stunned at the poor quality of pictures it takes - have you shot any HD video with it yet and does the product look as good as what we've watched online?

I'm impressed with the video I've seen on the 9930 and think RIM did a great job in that area - what I've thus far observed with what they did to the still camera is absoultely horrific - if a person needed to take pictures to document damage or read text the device appears to be almost worthless in that area.

Hey wonder if the camera is the "hardware defect" at&t didnt want? Maybe they want autofocus lol. I doubt it but throwing it out there

Is it possible it doesn't have a final spec camera because it's an engineering unit? All the reviews say 99xx 5mp camera surpasses other BBs.

Maybe the other CB members fortunate enough to have one comment on pic quality? I can't imagine the camera going backwards on their flagship model...

But that doesn't make sense. The pics posted definately prove that there is no AF contradictory to what's mentioned above

At work, I take some close up shots... I'm worried.
