I'm on sprint so I just wanted to pose this question.
Could the bad/random battery life only be a GSM problem? Will the Verizon and Sprint phones be any different? Or should we expect the same thing?

According to the tech specs listed on the website, yes.
More power being drawn to get you the download speeds you deserve! Good ol' slow CDMA doesn't need as much power. <-- My best guess based off "3G kills battery life!"
My hunch is that its just a software bug, but I wonder how long it will take RIM to fix it...?
