When my BlackBerry sometimes displays the egg timer spontaneously for a couple of minutes, and makes it hard for me to conduct any task, even making a call. I can't help but wonder what the consequences might be should I ever find myself in an emergency and that happens.

That "egg timer" is often a sign of low memory (happens with normal usage, and more so with apps that are known memory hogs). A battery pull will usually do the trick.

You may also want to consider upgrading your OS (assuming you haven't already). Newer OS'es are typically better optimized (less code) and offer more memory.

When I do a battery pull it takes around 5 minutes for my phone to be ready to go again.

Be sure to properly close apps, sounds like something is running in the background.

It takes at least a few minutes to do a battery pull.
